During the impending Diwali/Kali Puja festivities in West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court ordered a blanket prohibition on the use and sale of all types of firecrackers, including green crackers. The whole prohibition on firecrackers will be in effect for the rest of the year’s festivities, including Chhath Puja, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations.
The Court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by environmental activist Roshni Ali, who asked for a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during the upcoming festivities to protect people’s right to clean, healthy, and breathable air, especially in the wake of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
