China will not be intimidated, and those who try will suffer “broken skulls and carnage in front of the iron Great Wall of the 1.4 billion Chinese people,” President Xi Jinping warned at a public assembly Thursday to commemorate the governing Communist Party’s centennial. Xi spoke from the balcony of Tiananmen Square, highlighting the party’s part in delivering China to worldwide recognition and declaring that the party will never be separated from the people.
Xi stated that the party would maintain complete control over its military wing, the People’s Liberation Army, which has the world’s second-largest yearly budget after the United States Armed Forces.
