President Ram Nath Kovind mourns the death of Girish Karnad: Our cultural world is poorer today

President of India Ram Nath Kovind mourned the death of legendary actor and playwright Girish Karnad. He said that the cultural world is poorer today after the demise of Girish Karnad.

He wrote on Twitter, “Sad to hear of the passing of Girish Karnad, writer, actor and doyen of Indian theatre. Our cultural world is poorer today. My condolences to his family and to the many who followed his work #PresidentKovind.”

The 81-year-old actor died on Monday morning in Bengaluru after prolonged illness. He passed away after multiple organ failure.

His funeral will take place today at Kalpalli electric crematorium in Byappanahalli, Bengaluru.

Girsh Karnad, who was a famous playwright, began his acting career in 1970 with a Kannada film Samskara. Apart from working in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films, he was also seen in Hindi films.

His notable works in Bollywood include Manthan (1976), Pukar (2000), Iqbal (2005), Dor (2006), Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017).

The veteran playwright and actor was honoured with the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India.
