Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s third international airport in Kushinagar, with a flight from Sri Lanka marking the start of operations.
The flight transported Buddhist monks and Buddha’s relics delivered by the temple’s Mahanayaka from Waskaduwa Sri Subuddhi Rajvihaa Temple in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Cabinet Minister Namal Rajapaksha, who is also the son of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Rajapaksha, accompanied the monks. Later that day, Modi went to Kushinagar’s Mahaparinirvana Temple 1 to commemorate Abhidhamma Day with monks from both Sri Lanka and India.
The airport, which costs around Rs 260 crore to construct on a 590-acre plot of land, intends to attract Buddhist tourists from all over the world.
