Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led government at the Centre for extending the Border Security Force (BSF)’s jurisdiction over a larger area along three states’ borders.
He called the decision by the Centre a “direct attack on federalism.” Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah to reverse the erroneous decision.
His comments come as the Centre has given the BSF authority to search, arrest, and seize suspects up to 50 kilometers inside Indian territory from the International Border (IB) along India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh frontiers. The measure is intended to ensure “zero tolerance” for terrorism and cross-border criminal activity.
