On Thursday, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a Covid support package of 11 crores for 120,000 dairy farmers enrolled with the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (OMFED), the state’s largest milk buying organization. Under the plan, each farmer would be allocated a maximum of 6,000 to buy feed. According to Patnaik, when nearly all other economic sectors were in disarray, agriculture and related sectors were the only ones keeping the business afloat during the Covid-19 epidemic.
Several dairy producers reported a significant drop in the sale of dairy-based goods such as cheese, ghee, and curd as shops remained closed and lockdown restrictions prompted distress sales.
