The Congress choose Dalit-Sikh leader Charanjit Singh Channi as the new chief minister of Punjab on Sunday, after a day of frantic talks and back-and-forth. Captain Amarinder Singh, who resigned as chief minister on Saturday after months of strife within the state unit, would be replaced by Channi. Channi will be the first Dalit-Sikh chief minister in Punjab’s history.
Channi, who represents the Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency, is 58 years old. He is a member of the Dalit community, which makes up nearly a third of Punjab’s population. Channi was born in the village Makrona Kalan near Chamkaur Sahib on April 2, 1972, to S Harsa Singh and Ajmer Kaur.
