Water supply throughout Mumbai suspended because of heavy rain

As heavy rains lashed the metropolis on Sunday, the water supply throughout Mumbai was announced suspended until further notice. It happened as a result of the incessant downpour which hit the power supply at the Bhandup water complex — the city’s biggest water treatment plant.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed that the city’s water supply will be restored only once the electricity is back at the Bhandup complex.

The civic body has asked Mumbaikars to use water sparingly until the supply is fully restored. It also asked citizens to boil water before consuming for maximum safety.

Meanwhile, power outages have been reported in various parts of the city including Colaba, Bandra, Kurla, Malad, Kandivali, Ghatkopar, Mahalaxmi, Sewri, Wadala and Mumbai Central.

The downpour, which started after midnight, continued non-stop and led to waterlogging or flooding in several low-lying areas of Mumbai.

Also, as many as 25 persons have been killed in over 10 different incidents across the city as rains wreaked havoc on Sunday.

At least 17 persons were killed when a wall collapsed after a tree fell at Vashi Naka, New Bharat Nagar in the Chembur area around 1 am.

In another incident, at least 3 people perished when a few hutments caved in the Suryanagar slums in Vikhroli east.
