A special CBI court has sentenced a retired inspector of the Income Tax Department to three years rigorous imprisonment in a case of disproportionate assets. Leeladhar Bangera (67), an inspector of the Income Tax Department, had acquired assets worth Rs 59.89 lakh, which was found to be more than his known source of income. The special court has also imposed a fine of Rs 16,000 on Liladhar Bangera.Bangera was sentenced on Tuesday by Special Judge AS Syed. However, he then postponed the execution of the sentence for four weeks, so that Bangera could move the High Court to challenge the verdict. The court found the accused guilty under the provisions of Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and Prevention of Corruption Act of the Indian Penal Code. The case was registered against Bangera and his wife on October 7, 2011 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Bangera’s wife is employed in MMTC Limited, a Government of India undertaking. The couple earned assets worth Rs 77.21 lakh, more than their income of Rs 17.2 lakh during the job. During the trial, Bangera’s wife died in November 2016 and the case against him was closed.
