VK Sasikala, a close aide of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, has barely returned for three days and authorities in various parts of the state have started taking action against the jailed leader and his family members. The expelled AIADMK leader has recently returned to the state after completing a four-year jail sentence in Bangalore in a corruption case. The property in Sasikala’s Kanchipuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Chengalpet districts has been seized. The administration has seized more than 26,000 sq ft in Thanjavur, 144 acres in Kanchipuram and about 1,050 acres in Thiruvarur. Thiruvarur’s land was owned by a company owned by Sasikala and her family members. The companies bought these assets between 1994 and 1996.
District officials said in official statements that Sasikala’s assets are being seized as per the court’s order on disproportionate assets. However, there is also opposition from the administration to carry out this action as the former leader of AIADMK was convicted in these cases four years ago. Apart from this, there is only three months left in the state assembly elections.
On the matter, Chief Minister Palanisami said that there is nothing political in this step and the government is only following the order of the court. He said, ‘These actions are not related to politics in any way. The courts have given their decisions and those who have to take action on the basis of it are doing their work. It is not political at all. Earlier, the ruling AIADMK leadership had said that Sasikala and her supporters have nothing to do with the party and it is illegal for them to use the party’s flag.
