Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the all-party meeting on Saturday through video conferencing. At the meeting, he expressed regret over the demolition of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in America. Apart from this, he again reiterated that the government proposal given to farmers on 22 January is still the same. He said that the solution to the peasant movement can be found only through dialogue. The Prime Minister, quoting Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, informed the leaders of all parties about the government’s stand on agricultural laws.In the all-party meeting, the Prime Minister said, ‘We want to repeat what Narendra Singh Tomar said to the farmers. We said that we are not reaching a consensus, but we are proposing you and you (the farmer) can discuss. I’m just a phone call away. The government’s proposal is still the same. Please reach out to your followers. The solution will be found through negotiation. We all have to think about the nation.
Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Trinamool Congress’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Shiv Sena MP Vinayak Raut and Shiromani Akali Dal’s Balwinder Singh Bhander spoke at the meeting while Janata Dal United MP RCP Singh supported the laws.
This time the all-party meeting took place after the beginning of the session. Whereas by convention, this meeting is done before the session starts. Such all-party meetings are usually held before the beginning of the session of Parliament to ensure the smooth functioning of both houses.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a meeting with floor leaders (leaders of power and opposition) of the house on Friday. He told the leaders who participated in it that the leaders of all parties in the Lok Sabha are requested to respect the dignity of the House and their cooperation has also been sought for the smooth conduct of the proceedings.
