As a precautionary measure after nine lions tested positive for Covid-19 in the Vandalur zoo outside Chennai on june 3rd, swab tests were carried out on 56 elephants on Tuesday at two camps in coimbatore and nilgiris district. Nearly 28 elephants of Tamilnadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve tested positive for Covid-19 .

Speaking to news agency, PTI , Forest Minister K Ramachandran said he personally monitored the process at Kozhikmudi camp in Topslip in the district, where 28 elephants underwent the test. The camp has 18 male and 10 female elephants, of which three are kumkis , five ‘safari’ elephants and four aged ones, an official release said.
