The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the head of the Uttar Pradesh Police, following reports that officers failed to act on threats, made against a minor who survived a gangrape in Bulandshahar, after four of the six accused were taken into custody.
According to the reports, police personnel allegedly attempted to stop the survivor, when she tried to approach the Depty Inspector General (D.I.G.) of the Meerut Division to describe the threats and the events, she endured.
The officer eventually met her and ordered an investigation while also transferring the station house officer of Khurja police station to the police line for alleged negligence.
The Commission stated that it has taken Suo Motu Notice of the media coverage, which suggested serious lapses in police response and potential violations of the survivor’s human rights. The NHRC has directed the Uttar Pradesh Director General of police to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.
