A district’s judge’s death in Jharkhand took a new turn today after a clipping emerged that shows a vehicle coming at him and hitting him on a public road. Additional district judge Uttam Anand was hit by “an unidentified vehicle” barely half a kilometre from his home in Dhanbad early on Wednesday morning.
The incident came to the attention of the Supreme Court by senior lawyer and former Additional Solicitor General Vikas Singh. The lawyer urged SC to appear for the Supreme Court Bar Association, said the killing was a “brazen attack on the judiciary” that needs a CBI investigation. He said local police are usually complicit in such matters. He further informed the media “A judge is on a morning walk and is hit by a vehicle. He was dealing with bail applications of gangsters. This is an attack on judicial independence,”
Later, the Jharkhand High Court took suo motu cognizance of the killing and is hearing in the case is under process. The police report said that a man found the bleeding judge lying on the road and took him to the hospital where he died. According to an NDTV report, he remained unidentified for hours. His family had filed a missing report with the police after he did not return home for a long time. He was finally found at the hospital after police traced the identity of a man who died in a road accident.
The report said the CCTV footage clearly showed a tempo hitting the judge deliberately, according to police. They found the vehicle had been stolen hours before the incident happened. The judge was hearing several murder cases and had recently rejected the bail applications of two gangsters.
