The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on Monday that the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccinations may raise the risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an uncommon neurological condition after 100 early cases were found among the 12.5 million doses distributed.
Guillain-Barré syndrome can induce stiffness in the extremities and even full-body paralysis in extreme cases, although most patients recover. According to the CDC, the majority of the 100 or so cases documented in connection to the Johnson & Johnson vaccination were males aged 50 and older who acquired the syndrome two weeks after being shot.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the organization is scheduled to convene and examine the issue at a future date.
