India accounted for 16% of the total 3.8 billion global downloads of generative artificial intelligence applications in 2025, according to the State of Mobile for 2026 report released by Sensor Tower. Indian users alone downloaded nearly 600 million AI applications during the year.
The data highlights a sharp rise in India’s share of global GenAI app downloads. In comparison, India represented 11.31% of worldwide downloads in 2024 and about 10% in 2023, underlining the country’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence driven mobile platforms.
Despite the surge in usage, India’s contribution to global in app purchase revenues remained minimal at less than 1%. This trend suggests that most AI app developers continue to offer free services to users in the Indian market. Globally, AI applications generated revenues worth 5 billion dollars in 2025, with India’s share staying below 1%, similar to levels seen in 2024.
The growth momentum in India was particularly strong, with AI app downloads rising by 204% compared to the previous year. Revenue generated by these applications in India also increased by 240% during the same period, although the overall revenue base continues to be relatively small.
In terms of user engagement, Indian consumers spent nearly 6 billion hours on generative AI applications in 2025. This accounted for 12.6% of the total 48 billion hours spent globally on such apps, reflecting India’s growing influence in the global AI usage landscape.
