Police on Sunday said a case has been registered against nine people in connection with the alleged killing of a large number of stray dogs in Hanamkonda district. The action followed a complaint by animal welfare activists who claimed that around 300 dogs were killed in two villages over a span of several days.

According to the complaint filed on January 9 by activists Adulapuram Goutham and Farzana Begum, the incident took place in Shayampet and Arepally villages between January 6 and January 8. The complainants alleged that stray dogs in these areas were systematically poisoned during this period.
The activists accused local Sarpanches and Gram Panchayat secretaries of being involved in the incident. They alleged that two individuals were hired to administer poison to the dogs and that the carcasses were later dumped on the outskirts of the villages to conceal the act.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case at Shyampet police station under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, along with other applicable legal provisions. Officials said the matter is being investigated further to establish the full sequence of events and identify all those responsible.
