The central government has asked Twitter to remove 1178 Pakistani-Khalistani accounts that spread misinformation and inflammatory material about farmers’ protests. Twitter has not yet fully followed orders. This information is given by the sources. The government has taken this step at a time when only a few days ago the government asked it to block 250 accounts. In addition to spreading misinformation through these accounts, hashtags like ‘Kisan massacre’ were used. The latest notice to Twitter was given on Thursday of last week.
This demand has been made by the IT Ministry following a report by the Home Ministry. The new list includes accounts sympathetic to Khalistan and those with Pakistan links.
The instructions to block these accounts have been given on the basis that they can become a threat to the people amidst opposition from the farmers running in the country. The microblogging site is on the radar of the IT Ministry for ‘violating Indian law’ by not taking action against those who spread misinformation on ‘farmers’ protests’.
Recently, the IT ministry had instructed Twitter to block about 250 Twitter accounts that were spreading misinformation and using objectionable hashtags. After blocking these accounts for a day, Twitter unblocked them saying that they were not using ‘inflammatory language’.
