Bunty Jahagirdar, one of the accused in the 2012 Pune serial blasts case, was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants in Shrirampur town of Ahilyanagar district on Wednesday, according to police officials. Jahagirdar, who was in his mid fifties, was attacked around 2 pm while returning from a burial ground on Borawake College Road. He was travelling on a two wheeler along with another person when two men on a motorcycle opened fire at him.
Jahagirdar sustained bullet injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Ahilyanagar Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge said the motive behind the killing is not yet clear and multiple police teams have been formed to investigate the case. He added that efforts are underway to identify and trace the attackers.
Jahagirdar was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad for his alleged role in the Jangli Maharaj Road serial blasts in Pune. The incident took place on August 1, 2012, when four low intensity explosions occurred at different locations on the busy Jangli Maharaj Road, including near Balgandharva Theatre, a Dena Bank branch, a McDonald’s outlet and Garware Bridge, causing panic across the city.
Police records show that Jahagirdar had several criminal cases registered against him in Ahilyanagar district, including charges related to murder, physical assault and criminal intimidation. He had been out on bail since 2023 in connection with the Pune blasts case.
The police have seized evidence from the spot and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas as part of the ongoing investigation.
