Decisive victories in the last four stage on Friday led defending champion Amit Panghal (52kg) and Shiva Thapa (64kg) into the finals of the Asian Boxing Championship finals.
Panghal outboxed a familiar opponent in Saken Bibossinov of Kazakasthan by a 5-0 score, Thapa, the first Indian boxer in the tournament’s history to secure five medals, overcame a giant threat in top-seeded Bakhodur Usmonov of Tajikistan by a 4-0 decision to make it to the finals.
On the other hand, national champion Varinder Singh (60kg) lost to Iran’s Daniyal Shahbakhsh by 2-3 and had to settle for the bronze medal after a hearty fight.
