After the Taliban armed organization captured more than a fifth of Afghanistan’s provincial capitals in less than a week, Afghanistan’s acting finance minister, Khalid Payenda, resigned and departed the country.
Since Friday, the gang has taken control of nine provincial capitals in Afghanistan: Faizabad, Farah, Pul-e-Khumri, Sar-e-Pul, Sheberghan, Aybak, Kunduz, Taluqan, and Zaranj. Since initiating a series of offensives in May to coincide with the start of the final withdrawal of international soldiers, the Taliban have already seized wide swaths of rural Afghanistan.
Payenda’s destination was not immediately apparent. On Tuesday, the former minister announced his resignation via Twitter but provided no explanation.
