In an unexpected decision ahead of elections in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat late next year, Vijay Rupani resigned as Chief Minister on Saturday evening.
In a shocking twist, Mr. Rupani’s resignation was followed by that of his cabinet, leaving the ruling BJP with three options: pick a successor (and new government), allow the state to be placed under President’s Rule, or hold an Assembly election considerably earlier than planned. According to sources, no decision has been made on early elections at this time, and the party’s plan is likely to be a change of guard – a new Chief Minister.
