The patience of the Modi government and farmers will now be tested on the ongoing farmer movement against the new agricultural laws. The government will deal with this movement on the lines of the Shaheen Bagh movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The government’s plan is not to present any new proposals to the farmers’ organizations and to restrict their presence to the boundaries of Delhi. The government has made up its mind to wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict if the farmers’ organization does not agree to the postponement of the law for a year and a half and the proposal of the unilateral committee.
During this period, the government will not initiate any dialogue on its own lines on the lines of the Shaheen Bagh movement. Barricades, fences and spikes have been erected on the roads at Ghazipur, Singhu border and Tikri border. Its purpose is to prevent agitating farmers from entering Delhi.
Apart from this, the agitators have to be confined to a certain place. The government had adopted a similar strategy in Shaheen Bagh. The movement site was cordoned off and the government did not initiate a dialogue. As the tussle between the government and farmer organizations continues, the role of the Supreme Court and the committee formed by it has become extremely important in the whole matter. The three-member committee started work about two weeks ago.The committee has to submit its report next month. The government has also decided that if the farmer does not agree to the old proposal, then he will wait for the direction of the Supreme Court.
