World Cup 2019: Batsmen underestimate Yuzvendra Chahal, feels Sachin Tendulkar

Yuzvendra Chahal bagged the important wickets of David Warner and Glenn Maxwell as India bowled out Australia for 316 while defending 352 at The Oval on Sunday.

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been in tremendous form in the World Cup so far having picked up 6 wickets in the two matches against South Africa and Australia.

Chahal followed up on his good show against South Africa with two wickets against Australia in India’s second match which they won by a big margin of 36 runs in London to move up to 3rd place in the points table.

Chahal, who had picked 4 wickets against the Proteas in the first game, bagged the important wickets of David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, both of whom tried to go after the spinner but completely failed in their attempts. Chahal was miserly with the ball once again as he finished with 2 for 62 from his 10 overs.

Talking about the leg-spinner after the game, former India captain Sachin Tendulkar said batsmen tend to underestimate Chahal and pay the price for it later on.

“Yuzvendra Chahal bowled beautifully again. He’s had fair amount of success against Maxwell. Many guys underestimate him, they feel he bowls just stump to stump. But even when it comes to that in lesser helpful conditions, he’s got tremendous control over his flight and the length that he hits.

“Very rarely you will see Chahal pushing the ball through. He’s only pushing the ball through when he’s trying to bowl the flipper. Today was a great example when he got Warner out. Warner was beaten by the length. He stepped out to play the big shot but then he realised he’s not got to the pitch of the ball.

“And that is the ability of Chahal, you know the arm speed is exactly the same, but he releases the ball bit later than normal and that is what deceives batters,” Tendulkar told India Today in an exclusive interview after India’s victory.

After opting to bat first, India rode on a stupendous 117 from opener Shikhar Dhawan and useful fifties from Rohit Sharma (57) and Virat Kohli (82), to post the highest total by any team against Australia at World Cups.

After that, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah shone with the ball with 3 wickets each while Chahal bagged two as India bowled out Australia for 316 in 50 overs and topped the defending champions from third place in the 10-team points table with 2 wins from as many games.
