On the eve of the New York City mayoral election, United States President Donald Trump cautioned that the city could face a severe economic and social breakdown if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani secures victory. Trump officially endorsed former governor Andrew Cuomo for the position, arguing that New York’s future would be in danger under Mamdani’s leadership.
Threat to Limit Federal Aid
Posting on Truth Social on Monday, Trump said that if Mamdani wins, his administration will only provide the minimum level of federal funding required by law to New York City. He referred to Mamdani as a “Communist” and claimed that such leadership would lead to total failure, adding that he did not intend to waste federal money on a city governed by policies he believes are destructive.
Endorsement of Andrew Cuomo
Trump, in his statement, urged voters to back Andrew Cuomo, the former New York State governor now running as an independent candidate. He acknowledged that while not everyone may support Cuomo personally, he viewed him as the only capable option compared to Mamdani, whom he dismissed as inexperienced and ineffective.
Profile of Zohran Mamdani
Zohran Mamdani, aged 34, is of Indian descent, born in Uganda, and raised in New York City. Currently serving as a member of the New York State Assembly, Mamdani identifies as a Democratic socialist. He faces Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the Tuesday election. Trump accused Mamdani of embracing political ideals that have failed historically and labeled him as unqualified to restore New York’s former prosperity.
Trump’s Criticism and Election Dynamics
Trump described Mamdani as unproductive during his tenure in the State Assembly and argued that electing him would destroy the city’s economic base. He also warned voters that supporting Curtis Sliwa could indirectly help Mamdani win. The current mayor, Eric Adams, withdrew from the race in September following multiple controversies.
High Early Voting Turnout
According to the New York City Board of Elections, over 735,000 residents cast early ballots — nearly four times more than in 2021. Election Day polling runs from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on November 4.
Mamdani’s Campaign Promises
After defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary in June, Mamdani emerged as a leading contender. His campaign centers on making New York more affordable by reducing living costs, freezing rents for stabilized units, and expanding affordable housing construction.
Trump’s Continued Attacks
In a recent interview with CBS’s *60 Minutes*, Trump claimed that Mamdani would perform even worse than former mayor Bill de Blasio. He reiterated that he would hesitate to send federal funds to a city led by a candidate he calls “a Communist far worse than a Socialist.” Trump concluded by saying that, if forced to choose, he would prefer a flawed Democrat like Cuomo over a candidate he sees as representing extreme leftist ideology.
