Himachal Pradesh is reeling under the fury of an unrelenting monsoon as the state’s infrastructure buckles under nature’s onslaught. In the last 24 hours alone, a staggering 311 roads have been rendered impassable, 221 water supply schemes lie paralyzed, and 65 power transformers have been knocked out—plunging large areas into darkness and despair.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has flagged the situation as critical, with the worst-hit districts being Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba. Mandi has emerged as the epicenter of the chaos, with 184 road blockages choking mobility and isolating entire villages.
The National Highway-70, a crucial lifeline for the region, remains shut in the Mandi district due to incessant rains and massive landslides, disrupting transportation and emergency services.
Officials at the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), in their 10:00 AM briefing on Thursday, warned of continuing risks of landslides, flash floods, and further infrastructure damage as heavy rains show no signs of abating.
Rescue and repair efforts are ongoing, but with access routes cut off and weather conditions deteriorating, the situation continues to spiral.
“It’s a war against nature,” said a senior disaster management official. “We urge the public to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow all advisories strictly.”
