President Biden named Karine Jean-Pierre, the senior deputy press secretary, to succeed Jen Psaki as White House spokesperson on Thursday, crowning her the first Black woman to hold among the most high-profile positions in American politics. Ms. Jean-Pierre, who helped on Mr. Biden’s election and has a lengthy history in Democratic communications, will take over as the president’s second press secretary. In her new position, she will be responsible for providing daily intelligence briefings from the briefing room’s lectern.
Ms. Psaki will step down as press secretary on May 13. She is anticipated to join MSNBC as an anchor. Ms. Psaki said Ms. Jean-Pierre “will provide a voice to so many” after highlighting that her replacement will be the first Black woman and out gay person to work as press secretary.
