Post-election violence: The Supreme Court accepts Bengal’s appeal against the CBI investigation

The Supreme Court has accepted the West Bengal government’s petition contesting a Calcutta high court judgment demanding a CBI investigation into cases of post-election violence in the state and has asked the Centre to respond. The state has made out a case for issuing of notice to PIL petitioners, according to Justices Vineet Saran and Aniruddha Bose, on which the HC has ordered a CBI investigation.

The Bengal government argued that the HC was swayed by claims in PIL petitions and a ‘biassed’ report by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) teams, through their lawyer Kapil Sibal. He further said that the state was not allowed to present the activities it had done in response to post-election violence accusations before the HC.
