The Indian Council of Medical Research and  Union ministry of health and family welfare today has warned against smugness amid the waning second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Referring to the viral images of Manali, Kullu, Shimla and Dharamsala to beat the heat.

ICMR director-general Dr Balram Bhargava said at the health ministry’s press conference, “Covid-19 appropriate behaviour is absolutely essential. The pictures that we have seen today are frightening and we have to be very careful, very responsible and very cautious,”

A joint secretary of Health Ministry Luv Agarwal said, “I would like to highlight media coverage of revenge travel. People, fed up with sitting at home due to restrictions, now seem to believe that if restrictions have been lifted, it means that the virus has ended. The infectious disease is still among us. We need to continue following Covid-19 appropriate behaviour. Even a small mistake could prove costly,”

As the second wave declines, people are overcrowding at markets in various cities of the country. Yesterday, the Delhi government has ordered the closure of the famous Lajpat Nagar market over alleged violation of Covid-19 norms. Several other markets in the Capital, too, have been warned against overcrowding.

Meanwhile, according to the Union Health Ministry report, 34,703 fresh Covid-19 cases are registered in the last 24 hours. This is the lowest in 111 days. The number of active cases is 464,357, which is the lowest in 101 days. The active cases constitute 1.52% of the total cases.

Total recoveries touched 29,752,294, including 51,864 patients who recovered during the last 24 hours. The recovery rate has increased to 97.17%.
