Thousands of people including the covid patients in Gujarat and Maharashtra are being moved out to safe locations because of the cyclone Tauktae. It is to reach the Gujarat coast on Monday evening, releasing winds with speed up to 175 km/hour. Here are some updates regarding the cyclone:

  1. The weather office reported this morning that the cyclonic storm intensified overnight into a “very severe cyclonic storm” over the east-central Arabian Sea. It is most likely to intensify further and reach the coasts of Gujarat on the evening of May 17. Landfall between Porbandar and Mahuva in Bhavnagar district is also expected.
  2. The weather office mentioned that the speed of the winds would be reaching 60-70 kmph, blasting to 80 kmph within the coasts of Goa and Maharashtra is expected today and tomorrow.
  3. The cyclone has triggered heavy rainfall in some parts of Maharashtra and other states on the West Coast. Heavy winds and rains hit several parts of Goa on Sunday which has also affected the power supply.
  4. In Maharshtra, coastal areas are on high alert. Covid patients who are undergoing treatments are being relocated. Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray’s office tweeted that they would ensure uninterrupted power and oxygen supplies in the hospitals.
  5. The Gujarat government said that it would evacuate more than 1 lakh people to safe locations. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has asked the officials to ensure uninterrupted electric supply and other medical facilities to the Covid-19 hospitals.
