Kerala has extended its covid lockdown for a week till May 23, putting four districts under “triple lockdown” with  much more restrictions than the other 10. These districts are Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Malappuram.

The lockdown was imposed considering a drastic rise in the number of cases in the state which began on May 8 and was scheduled on May 16. On the current day, the state reported 34,694 fresh covid cases and 93 deaths as reported by the State’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However the number of cases reported today were less than yesterday which were 40,000.

The Chief Minister said that the vaccinations for the 18-44 age group would begin from Monday, May 17 and the registrations will start from tomorrow. The first batch of Covishield vaccines have been ordered directly from the company which arrived last Monday in Kochi.

He said,”The month of May will be decisive for Kerala”, referring to the battle of Kerala against the pandemic. Apart from the increase in the covid cases, the state is going to witness the monsoon from the next few weeks which will act as a catalyst for the disease.
