IMD issues red, orange alerts in several Kerala districts; cyclone Tauktae to hit in the next 36 hours.

Kerala has been put on red alert for heavy rainfall in the districts of Thiruvanathapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta. The state is most likely to be hit by the cyclone Tauktae

The Lakshwadeep and the adjoining areas of the southeast Arabian sea is well marked as the low pressure area and is most likely to develop a cyclonic storm. The storm is estimated to hit the west coast within the next 36 hours. Red alert has been sounded for the districts of Thiruvananthpuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta of extremely heavy rainfall for Friday.

An orange alert has also been sounded for a very heavy rainfall of 11-20 cm for nine districts including Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Mallapuram. The weather department of Kerala and state disaster management has requested the public to stay from the coasts. The wind would blow speeding up-to 40Kmph in various districts of Kerala. The fishermen have also been warned to stay away from the waters.

The cyclonic circulation is extending upto mid tropospheric levels and is most likely to concentrate into a depression within the next 12 hours. This will firther intensify into a cyclonic storm during the upcoming 24 hours. It is very likely to intensify further and move northwestwards towards Gujarat and adjoining coasts of Pakistan. The storm is estimated to reach the coasts of Gujarat around the evening of May 18.

District administrations have been asked to get ready for the relief camps for  the people living in the low-lying areas in case of any destruction. NDRF teams are on standby and a team has already been allocated in the district of Kollam and  few families have also been shifted from the same
