A youth is accused of using an offensive and altered photo as his WhatsApp status, injuring religious emotions. According to claims in the media, he allegedly changed a photo of a saffron flag flying above Mecca’s mosque. The youngster, identified as Abhishek Hiremath, was detained after a complaint was filed at the Old Hubballi police station. He lives in Hubballi’s Anand Nagar neighborhood, which has a higher Muslim population.

The populace was furious and dissatisfied with the police response. Demonstrators gheraoed the police station late Saturday night, pelting stones and causing damage to police cars. To keep the mob under control, police reverted to using lathi charges and rubber bullets. To disperse the gathering, they fired rounds into the air and launched tear gas shells.

After the Facebook outage, which lasted about seven hours and affected Instagram and WhatsApp, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune dropped by over $6 billion in just a few hours, knocking him down a rung on the list of the world’s wealthiest individuals.

A whistleblower came forward hours before the disruption and exposed her identity, which most likely contributed to the outage. Zuckerberg’s worth was decreased by almost $6 billion in just a few hours. This has landed Zuckerberg in fifth place among billionaires, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

He is now in sixth place, with $120.9 billion, behind Bill Gates. Facebook’s stock has lost roughly 5% of its value since mid-September, bringing the total loss to 15%.

Users claimed that WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook were down in various regions of the world on Monday evening. Facebook owns all three applications, which run on the same infrastructure.

According to a post on the Facebook page, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.” A Domain Name System (DNS) issue was suggested by the message. The Domain Name System (DNS) enables web addresses to direct visitors to their desired locations.

On Twitter, users reported that the major social networking and communication sites had been unreachable since approximately 9 p.m. Indian time.

Social media giant Facebook has said that it has banned the Taliban and all content supporting it from its platforms as it considers the group to be a terrorist organisation, according to a media report.

The company says it has a dedicated team of Afghan experts to monitor and remove content linked to the insurgent group.

For years, the Taliban has used social media to spread its messages.

“The Taliban is sanctioned as a terrorist organisation under US law and we have banned them from our services under our Dangerous Organisation policies. This means we remove accounts maintained by or on behalf of the Taliban and prohibit praise, support, and representation of them,” a Facebook spokesperson told the BBC.

“We also have a dedicated team of Afghanistan experts, who are native Dari and Pashto speakers and have knowledge of local context, helping to identify and alert us to emerging issues on the platform,” the spokesperson said.

The social media giant said it does not make decisions about the recognition of national governments but instead follows the “authority of the international community”.

Facebook highlighted that the policy applies to all of its platforms, including its flagship social media network, Instagram and WhatsApp.

However, there are reports that the Taliban is using WhatsApp to communicate.

Facebook told the BBC that it would take action if it found accounts on the app to be linked to the group.

WhatsApp has added a new feature that could significantly enhance group video talks. Consumers will now be able to join group calls even after they have begun. The new feature will be progressively phased out, so it may be some time before it is accessible to all WhatsApp users.

The first signs of this development appeared earlier in the month when beta version 2.21.140.11 of Apple’s TestFlight program was discovered.

This new feature implies that when a group call is initiated, the requested WhatsApp user is no longer required to participate instantly. He or she gets a message informing him or her about the current group call and can attend it at any moment.

WhatsApp is releasing a new user interface for audio and video conversations, making it easy to manage members and join a current group call even if you missed it before.

The most recent WhatsApp beta version featured a new calling UI that appears to be influenced by FaceTime. Toggles are more visible in the new UI, with a brilliant white colour scheme. Toggles in the previous edition were tinted grey, making it difficult to discern whether something was switched on or off at first glance.

The end call button has been moved to the bottom row, next to the sound, mic, and video toggles.

Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday said the government is not in favour of banning any social media platform. If half of the government is on Twitter, including Prime Minister and President, it shows how fair the government is, but social media intermediaries, a status that Twitter has recently lost, have to follow local rules, the minister said to news agency ANI. On WhatsApp, he said all ordinary users can continue to use it. “It is my word,” the minister said. The minister’s remarks come amid the ongoing face-off between the government and Twitter which escalated as the government withdrew the legal protection — that all social media intermediaries in the country enjoy — from Twitter.

On the issue of WhatsApp, which has taken a legal path against the new I-T rules, the minister said the government does not want all WhatsApp messages to be decrypted. “If any content goes viral, causing mob lynching, riots, killing, showing women in nudity, sexual exploitation of children, only in these limited categories, you will be asked to declare who started the mischief,” the minister said.

In case if an inciting message originated outside the country, then the government wants to know who started it in India, the minister added.

When Capitol Hill in Washington was raided, you block Twitter accounts of all including then President. During farmers’ strike, Red Fort is raided by terrorist supporters showing naked swords, injuring policemen and pushing them in a ditch, then it’s freedom of expression. If Capitol Hill is US’ pride, Red Fort is India’s where PM hoists Tricolour. You show parts of Ladakh as China’s part. It takes a fortnight for us to pursue you to remove it. This isn’t fair. As a democracy, India is equally entitled to safeguard its digital sovereignty,” the minister told the news agency, reiterating the flashpoints between the government and the Twitter in the past.

Google, Facebook and WhatsApp have complied with new digital rules issued by the government and have shared the required information. Twitter, on the other hand, continues to object to the revised guidelines.

All major social media organisations have shared details of chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and grievance officer with the ministry, as decreed by the new policy.

Earlier, the dispute over Twitter’s handling of certain tweets intensified into an all-out war of words. The government was quoted as saying that the messaging platform was levelling baseless and false allegations to defame India and dictating terms to the world’s largest democracy.

The ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Wednesday, 19th May issued a notice to Whatsapp regarding it’s Privacy Policy. According to the sources, the notice says that there are various options availabe for the messaging platform under Indian laws.

Governmnent has directed Whatsapp to withdraw it’s privacy policy. “Deffering date of acceptance not enough”. The governement believes that the policy is discriminatory to Indians. Users in Europe have the option to opt out of the policy while users in India are not being provided with a choice.

WhatsApp had earlier deffered it’s privacy policy from February 8 to May 15 following outrage from users. Earlier this month, WhatsApp said a majority of users had accepted the new terms of service, and that it would not delete the accounts of those who haven’t accepted the terms yet. However, users who didn’t accept the new terms could expect to have limited functionality over time.
