New Delhi| Following a series of earlier disputed statements about India, former U.S. Presnewident Donald Trump on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that India would stop buying oil from Russia — a step Trump described as a major move to increase pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine war. Trump added that the shift would take time but that the process had begun.

New Delhi quickly rejected the claim. India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said he had no information of any such conversation between Modi and Trump on Wednesday.

Russia, meanwhile, defended its ties with India on energy. Denis Alipov, Russia’s ambassador to India, described Russian oil as one of the world’s most affordable options and said energy cooperation with New Delhi aligns with India’s national interests. In Moscow, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak expressed confidence that energy collaboration would continue, calling the partnership economically viable and saying he expected ongoing dialogue and cooperation to deepen.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal added that India is actively negotiating trade agreements with several partners, including the United States, Oman and the European Union, and remains an attractive destination for investment.

On the political front, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of being intimidated by Trump and suggested Modi had effectively ceded the decision over purchasing Russian oil to the former U.S. president.

Trump also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday evening, in a roughly two-hour call. He posted that Putin congratulated him on efforts to halt the Israel–Gaza fighting and that the two discussed potential post-conflict trade between the U.S. and Russia. The leaders’ senior advisers are expected to meet next week, and Trump and Putin plan to meet in Budapest thereafter. Trump is also scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and warned that continued Hamas killings in Gaza would leave few options besides decisive action.

Ukrainians residing in the east should evacuate while they still have the chance, according to the nation’s deputy prime minister. Ukraine won’t be able to “assist” if they don’t, according to Iryna Vereshchuk, as Russia’s military soldiers advance in. Her announcement comes as an image emerges of crimes committed in Ukrainian communities under Moscow’s influence, including reports of rape, abuse, and killings.

Putin claimed the purported crimes observed in Bucha – the village where remains of people were dumped out on the sidewalks and burial graves were uncovered at the church, was a “crude and cynical provocation” perpetrated by the Ukrainian administration in a conversation with Hungary’s re-elected prime minister – and Moscow ally – Viktor Orban on Wednesday.

“This much is obviously clear: Ukraine will never be a win for Putin,” Biden stated in a tweet. Putin might be able to conquer a city, but he’ll never be able to maintain control of the country.”

In reaction to Moscow’s attack on Ukraine, he placed an embargo on US imports of Russian oil, gas, and electricity just hours ago. “Russian oil will no longer be taken at US ports,” he said, “and the American people will strike back hard against Putin’s military machine.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Russia’s Vladimir Putin that Moscow and Berlin should talk despite “deep differences”, in her final working visit to Russia before stepping down as leader next month.

Merkel’s trip to Moscow coincides with the anniversary of a nerve-agent attack on now-jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose life was saved by Berlin doctors.

Her aides have made clear that the timing of the meeting is not accidental.

Even if we have deep disagreements, we are talking to one another and it should stay that way,” Merkel told Putin in a televised exchange before the talks at the Kremlin.

“We have a lot to talk about,” she added, naming several issues on their agenda, including the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

They are also expected to discuss the simmering conflict in eastern Ukraine and the authoritarian crackdown in Russia-allied Belarus.

Putin greeted Merkel with flowers, a gesture he reserves for female leaders, and said he hoped the visit will not only be a “farewell” one, but a “serious one”.

Merkel, who will bow out of politics following German elections on September 26, did not mention Navalny in her opening comments.

She has blamed the attack on the Kremlin after tests in European laboratories showed Navalny was poisoned using the Novichok chemical weapon, and has called for his release. Putin denies any involvement.

Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said the attack had put a “heavy burden” on relations between the two countries.

“Our demands have still not been met,” Seibert said earlier this week, adding that the case was still “unresolved”.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Putin to release Navalny on the eve of Merkel’s visit in a phone call with the Russian leader, according to the Elysee.

The chancellor will travel to Russia’s rival Ukraine after visiting the Kremlin chief, who infrequently receives Western visitors in Moscow.

Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany, and Putin, a former KGB agent stationed there, speak each other’s languages.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told US climate envoy John Kerry that Moscow and Washington have a shared interest in battling climate change, the Kremlin said Wednesday, in a rare area of common ground between the rivals.

The climate problem is one of the areas where Russia and the United States have common interests and similar approaches,” Putin said in a phone call with Kerry who is visiting Moscow, the Kremlin said in a statement.

The former secretary of state is in Russia this week to discuss climate change with officials and has called on the country to cooperate with the US on the issue.

Putin said Moscow “attaches great importance” to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and “advocates de-politicising” dialogue on climate change.

The comments on a rare point of cooperation between the two countries come after Putin met US President Joe Biden for talks in Geneva last month.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft was operating in sync with a British destroyer during last week’s Black Sea incident.

Moscow said one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of British destroyer Defender on Wednesday to force her out of an area near the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. Britain denied that account, insisted its ship wasn’t fired upon and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters.

Speaking Wednesday during a marathon live call-in show, Mr. Putin said that the U.S. aircraft’s apparent mission was to monitor the Russian military’s response to the British destroyer. He added that Moscow was aware of the U.S. intentions and responded accordingly to avoid revealing sensitive data.

In Wednesday’s incident, Britain insisted the Defender had been making a routine journey through an internationally recognized travel lane and remained in Ukrainian waters near Crimea. The UK, like most of the world, recognises Crimea as part of Ukraine despite the peninsula’s annexation by Russia.

Russia denounced the Defender’s move as a provocation and warned that next time it could fire to hit intruding warships if they again try to test Russian military resolve.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president on Wednesday said that he was vaccinated with Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) earlier in March and April during the annual nationwide televised phone-in show in Moscow, news agencies reported.

Putin said that he felt he needed to be protected against Covid-19 for as long as possible and also said that he did not feel any significant side-effects barring tenderness at the jab site. “After the first shot, I didn’t feel anything at all. About four hours later, I felt that there was some tenderness where I had received the shot. I received the second at mid-day. At midnight, I measured my temperature. It was 98.9°F. I went to sleep, when I woke up my temperature was 97.8°F. That was it,” Putin told the nation.

Putin said that he is against mandatory vaccination but said that the army is getting vaccinated with Sputnik-V like him. He also defended the local authorities taking steps to ensure vaccination saying it is needed to avoid a national lockdown. “The military is getting vaccinated with Sputnik V, and after all I’m the commander-in-chief,” Putin said. The Russian president however urged Russians to not listen to rumours and pay heed to what the specialists are saying about the vaccine. He said it is ‘necessary’ to avoid listening to people ‘who understand less and spread rumours’.
