]]>It was the 7th time in his career that Anderson had picked Kohli’s wicket. After the end of the play on Day 1, the veteran pacer said that dismissing Kohli was a special moment for him as it is important to keep the India captain quiet.
“I think so (it was special). We have had some great battles over the years. He is someone you want to keep quiet. Especially, in a five-match series, if he gets going he can be very disruptive,” Anderson said at the virtual press conference.
Anderson also dismissed KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara in a similar fashion as India were bundled out for 78. Speaking on how he continues to be in his best form, the 39-year-old Anderson revealed that he works harder in the gym.
“As I get older, I feel like I have to work that little bit harder in the gym. I feel like I bowl less in the nets, and try to save it for when it matters in the middle,” Anderson said.
“The biggest test in Test cricket is mentally getting yourself up for bowling big spells and playing in big games. It’s about keeping yourself switch on through games and switch off when you are not bowling — that’s something I’ve always had,” he added.
Asked about his problematic right shoulder, he said: “It still hurts. You just find a way of putting up with it. it’s just part and parcel of the job.”
Anderson said that after all the talk during the Lord’s Test, the aim here was to “shut the noise” and focus on the job. India took a 1-0 lead at Lord’s riding on the tail-enders’ brave display with the bat followed by their excellent bowling.
“We have made a conscious effort of trying to just focus on us, on what we do well and try and ignore everything else, the outside noise or wherever there might be going on, and make sure there’s a real focus on what we do well,” the fast bowler signed off.

]]>Speaking during a discussion on ESPNCricinfo, Maninder said Kohli needs to understand that England pitches are not like Indian pitches, and he needs to spend time in the middle before going for a drive on balls pitched outside off stump.
“Before the Test match, Virat Kohli had said that in these English conditions you’ve got to keep your ego in your pocket. And I think that is absolutely right. If he tries to dominate, like Virat Kohli usually does, these are not the pitches where he can bat like that.
“He needs to spend some time there, like he did on the previous tour where he scored almost 600 runs. Once you know the pace and know how much the ball is seaming around, they you can carry on playing your shots,” he said.
“These are not flat Indian pitches, where you can just put your foot forward and start driving. And what Kohli preached, he will have to practice. Keep your ego in your pocket,” Maninder added.
The former India spinner further added that Kohli is making the same mistakes he made in 2014 in England, and he needs to take inspiration from how he played in the country in 2018 to bounce back.
“Virat Kohli is basically making the same mistakes that he was making on his first tour of England. He is playing away from the body. It could happen to you if you are not playing regular cricket,” Maninder Singh said.
“He got out a couple of times the same way as you did in 2014, when he just got a 138 runs in 10 innings. I think things start coming back – am I playing the wrong line? Should I be leaving these balls?
All these Indian boys, in the first two Tests, they were leaving balls outside the off stump. I don’t know that happened in this Test match. They were wanting to play at it and paid the price for it. With Virat Kohli, he is going through a bad patch,” he signed off.

England’s short-ball ploy was apparently in response to Bumrah bowling short to Anderson in the first innings.
Anderson spoke about facing up to Bumrah during that menacing spell late on Day 3 and said he has “not felt like this ever”, suggesting Bumrah wasn’t trying to get him out.
After that I have not felt like this, I don’t think ever in my career, I felt like he wasn’t trying to get me out. He bowled an over that was maybe 10, 11, 12 balls, bowling no ball after no ball, and bowling short. I think he bowled two on the stumps, which I managed to dig out,” Anderson told BBC podcast ‘Tailenders’.

]]>India’s eight-wicket loss in Southampton prolonged their wait for a first global title since Mahendra Singh Dhoni led them to victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
It was Virat Kohli’s fourth unsuccessful attempt to lead India to an ICC title, the previous being the 2019 One Day World Cup when they lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals in Manchester.
“India fail the ultimate Test,” the Times of India newspaper said as it questioned India’s team selection and their preparation for the match.
“The lack of match practice in England hurt them but shouldn’t India have played an extra batsman in Hanuma Vihari?”
The Times suggested seamer Mohammed Siraj should also have been picked in the match in which India played both their spinners in conditions that gave more assistance to swing and seam bowling.
“The answers will arrive in due course but it will rankle this proud Indian team, which has towered over the rest of the test pack for a few years now,” the daily said. “No one, after all, remembers who came second.”
While captain Kohli’s title drought in global tournaments continued, New Zealand put behind their losses in successive 50-overs World Cup finals with their victory at the Ageas Bowl.
“Kiwis bury the ghosts of 2019, crowned first World Test champion,” The Hindu newspaper said on its sports page.
The Indian Express also hailed New Zealand’s victory with the headline ‘An island conquers the world’.
“Even as India worryingly continued to trip up in knockout games, New Zealand, the team that not even the most parochial Indian fan can stir up any negative emotion for, admirably held their nerve to become world Test champions,” it said.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir summed up the sentiment when he tweeted: ‘Nice guys don’t always finish last! Congrats NZ. World No.1!’
