Exit polls are forecasts made by news outlets utilizing randomized or methodical sample patterns to estimate election victors before the winner is announced. Assumptions are based mainly on voter responses to questions like which group they decided to vote for and why. Following the answer, the organizations decipher the electoral pattern in order to determine which candidate or party is most likely to succeed in each constituency.

Between February 10 and March 7, the Election Commission of India barred the publication of exit polls, and also printed and digital media firms from holding or releasing electoral results forecasts.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, 89, who is admitted to a hospital in Lucknow, is said to be in a critical condition and is on life-saving support system. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath paid a visit to the hospital to enquire about the veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday.

Adityanath came to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in the morning. He was accompanied by medical education minister Suresh Khanna, the hospital said in a statement.

“Kalyan Singh’s health status is critical and is on life-saving support system,” the hospital said, adding he is under close observation of the doctors.

“The senior faculty of Critical Care Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology and Endocrinology are keeping a close watch on all the aspects related to his health,” the hospital said.

Hospital director professor RK Dhiman is supervising his treatment on a daily basis, it added.

The former UP CM was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit on July 4 due to an infection and reduced consciousness level.

Earlier, he was undergoing treatment at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences here. The 89-year-old veteran leader had served as the governor of Rajasthan as well.

On August 1, Union home minister Amit Shah had visited the ailing leader at the hospital.

The Uttar Pradesh government, which has decided to open schools for physical classes, on Thursday said the attendance for students will not be compulsory and schools may be closed again if the Covid situation worsens. Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma told this to the state legislative council while replying to a question by teacher constituency member Dhruv Kumar Tripathi.

“In basic education, attendance is not compulsory. We have also not made attendance mandatory for classes from 9 to 12,” Mr Sharma said.

“Guardians, teachers and political organisations have also said the offline education should be started even if it is for a shorter period,” he said.

“In UP, the present atmosphere is sufficiently secure but if there is any indication of any concern (regarding Covid), we can also close schools,” he added.

Mr Tripathi also asked Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh if there was any arrangement for vaccination of teachers and students below 18 years of age.

In a supplementary question, SP member Shatrudra Prakash asked the minister if it is safe for little children to go to school without vaccination.

The minister replied that the vaccine for children below 18 is not yet available but it is expected to be available by September. He said after the vaccine is available, a campaign will be launched to inoculate children.

The state government has opened schools from August 16 for classes 9 to 12. For classes six to eight, they will be opened from August 23 and for classes one to five from September 1.

Offline teaching-learning activities for Classes 9 to 12 students in Uttar Pradesh resumed on Monday, with strict health and Covid safety precautions in place. The state government has allowed the resumption of classes in two shifts – from 8 am to 12 pm and from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm – with 50 per cent of students in each shift.

Classes will be held from Monday to Friday and both students and staff will be required to follow the covid protocols such as wearing masks and using sanitizers within the school premises.

This decision has been taken by Yogi Adityanath led the UP government as the COVID-19 cases are dripping off in the state.

Students are required to carry COVID-19 essentials like sanitizers, face masks, handwash, etc. in the school premises.

Schools have been closed due to COVID-19 for more than a year now and as the coronavirus pandemic has started deescalating various states all across the country are planning to reopen the schools in a phased manner.

Detailed SOPs have been launched by some of the state governments. States like Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, and Himachal Pradesh have started offline classes in the first week of August.

Bihar and Andhra Pradesh are two other states that have commenced physical classes from August 16.

On August 7, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar tweeted regarding the reopening of Classes 9 to 12 and colleges with 50 per cent capacity.

Additionally, the Karnataka government has decided to reopen schools for students in Classes 9 to 12. However, schools will reopen only in those districts where the COVID-19 positivity rate is less than 2 per cent.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Friday kicked off a special vaccination campaign across Uttar Pradesh to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. The BJP will run a three-day vaccination program ‘Apna Booth-Vaccination Yukta’ across the state from July 23 to July 25.

Uttar Pradesh BJP President Swatantra Dev Singh has appealed to people to get vaccinated in a bid to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. He also urged party workers to participate enthusiastically in the special vaccination program to create awareness among the public and motivate them to get vaccinated.

According to the Uttar Pradesh general secretary and coordinator of the vaccination program, Subrat Pathak, BJP officials and workers will participate in the vaccination campaign by running a three-day special program at the booth level.

Subrat Pathak said that there would be two workers at every helpdesk to help people get registered and vaccinated at all the vaccination centres.

“On July 23, 24 and 25, all the public representatives and district in-charge will reach at least three vaccination centres along with the party workers,” Subrat Pathak said.

BJP workers on the ground will also motivate all service providers to get themselves inoculated by cooperating in their registration process.

The UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), in a major operation, has arrested two terrorists, linked to Al Qaeda, from Kakori on the outskirts of Lucknow on Sunday. The two ultras were reportedly hiding in a house in the Kakori area. The ATS team had received a tip-off about their presence and had been tracking them for the past week.

A team led by IG ATS, GK Goswami, closed in on their location and arrested the two from a house that belongs to one Shahid.

Wasim was a tenant in the house for the past 15 years. The house has a motor garage in it.

According to ATS sources, two pressure-cooker bombs, a detonator, and 6 to 7 kilograms of explosives have been recovered from the house. A bomb disposal squad has been summoned to the site and nearby houses have been evacuated.

The IG did not disclose the names of the arrested persons and said that further details would be revealed after interrogation.

ATS sources said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the two terrorists planned to target a BJP MP and some senior BJP leaders in Lucknow.

After two cases of the Delta plus strain surfacing in Deoria and Gorakhpur, a patient tested positive to the Kappa strain of Covid-19 in Sant Kabir Nagar.

The patient, a 66-year old man, has died. The strain was detected during the genome sequencing exercise.

His sample was collected on June 13 as a routine and sent to CSIR’s Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi. The results came a few days ago.

Like Delta plus, Kappa too has been declared as the virus of concern.

Head of microbiology department at BRD Medical College Dr Amresh Singh said the patient had tested Covid positive on May 27 in Sant Kabir Nagar and was brought to BRD Medical College on June 12.

The sample was taken on June 13. “The patient died in the course of treatment on June 14. He had no travel history,” Dr Singh said.

Health officials said more than 2,000 samples have been sent for genome sequencing from UP. Of the total, 80% have tested positive to the Delta virus while 6% have tested positive to the alpha strain. On Wednesday, two cases of Delta Plus strain were recorded for the first time in UP.

Officials said none of the three had travel history which suggests the virus was mutating in UP
