The statement was delivered by Thackeray at the inauguration of two wings of the annex building at the Bombay high court’s Aurangabad bench. On the occasion, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijuju, Supreme Court Justice D Y Chandrachud, and others were present.
Thackeray said: “Justice D Y Chandrachud pointed out (during his address at the event) that a case is pending in Maharashtra since 1958 as the accused is absconding. But today we have a case where the complainant is missing.”

]]>Maharashtra’s daily tally of cases has been stable for quite some time now but capital city of Mumbai has been witnessing a sudden surge, the city reported 495 cases on Sunday, the highest since July 15.
The state is gearing up for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations which is set to start later this week and Thackeray has cautioned citizens to avoid crowds and abide by proper Covid-19 preventative norms as cases rose after celebrations concluded last year. “There was a surge in Covid-19 cases after festivals last year. I request all to avoid crowding. Wearing a face mask is important even after vaccination,” he said on Sunday during an interaction with doctors.
Thackeray urged political parties to prioritize the well-being of citizens as festivals can be celebrated later when the pandemic is under control. “We can celebrate festivals later. Let us prioritise the lives and health of our citizens. The situation can go out of hand in view of the spike in daily cases,” Thackeray said in a statement. “Who would like to impose restrictions on festivals and religious programmes? But people’s lives are important,” he added.
“We have to avoid crowding…have patience. We should not be required to close the places which have been opened up now,” he said, adding, “people should know that the enemy is yet not completely defeated…the thick tail is still there.”
Thackeray also warned political parties for demanding temples be reopened across the state. “Do not agitate for reopening of temples but do it against Covid-19,” he said on Sunday without naming any particular political outfit.

]]>Earlier, Rane had approached the Bombay High Court, seeking protection from arrest, after two FIRs were filed against him over his remarks.
Rane also sought quashing of the FIRs. Two FIRs were registered against Rane. While one of the complaints was registered in Pune on Tuesday, the other one was filed in Nashik.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out between workers of Shiv Sena, BJP and the police in Mumbai as Shiv Sena workers marched towards Rane’s residence, news agency ANI reported.
During his Jan Ashirwad Yatra in adjoining Raigad district, Rane had said, “It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of our Independence. He leaned back to enquire about the count of years of independence during his speech. Had I been there, I would have given (him) a tight slap,” news agency PTI reported.
The BJP leader and former Shiv Sena Chief Minister Rane claimed that Thackeray, after forgetting the year of India’s independence during his 15 August address, had to check the same with his aides in the middle of the speech.
While BJP state president had argued that Narayan Rane being Union minister cannot be arrested by the state, Rane had alleged misuse of power by the MVA government.
Reacting to the news of the FIRs, Rane was earlier quoted as saying:
“I have no information that an FIR has been registered against me. I am not a common man. I have not committed any crime. Is it not a crime if someone doesn’t know about 15th August? I had said that I would have slapped — these were the words and it’s not a crime.”
Reacting to the arrest, BJP president JP Nadda tweeted in Hindi, “The arrest of Union Minister Narayan Rane ji by the Maharashtra government is a violation of constitutional values. We will neither be scared nor suppressed by such action. These people are troubled by the immense support the BJP is getting in the Jan-Aashirvad Yatra. We will continue to fight democratically, the journey will continue. (sic)”
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Vinayak Raut demanded that Narayan Rane should “must some respect for the Constitution” and step down as Union minister after being arrested, PTI reported.

Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday said, “During the meeting, Uddhav Thackeray stressed that the parties must win people’s trust.”
“As of today, there is no lust for power among the opposition parties, but even when the chair of power is in sight, people should be able to trust the opposition parties with the belief that they will remain strong and united,” Mr Raut quoted Uddhav Thackeray as saying during the meeting.
The Sena’s Rajya Sabha member said that Sonia Gandhi had personally called up the leaders of all parties and requested them to join the meeting.
The meeting was attended by leaders of 19 opposition parties, including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and four non-Congress chief ministers – TMC’s Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), DMK’s M K Stalin (Tamil Nadu) and JMM’s Hemant Soren (Jharkhand) and Uddhav Thackeray.
During the meeting, Mrs Gandhi urged the leaders to rise above political compulsions to take on the BJP in the interest of the nation and start planning “systematically” to realise the “ultimate goal” of winning the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to provide a government that believes in the values of the freedom movement and provisions of the Constitution.
Mr Raut said that apart from discussion on how to prepare for the next general elections by staying united, several issues like alleged Pegasus snooping, issues concerning farmers, price rise and “attack on democracy” figured at the virtual meeting, he said.
When asked about the developments in Afghanistan, Mr Raut said, India faces the threat of Taliban since it has support of Pakistan and China, which are India’s “enemies”, reported news agency PTI.
If there are voices of support for Taliban in India, the government should crush them immediately, ” he said.
