India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav on Thursday revealed that maintaining a uniform mindset across all competitions has been the key factor behind the team’s sustained success in T20 international cricket, as the co-hosts prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup as strong favourites.

Speaking at the Captains’ Press Conference, Suryakumar said India no longer differentiates between bilateral series and major tournaments in terms of approach, which has helped the side perform with consistency over the last few years.

According to him, India earlier treated bilateral series differently from ICC events, but that mindset has changed. Whether it is an ICC tournament, the Asia Cup or a bilateral match, the team now aims to play with the same intent and style.

India have enjoyed remarkable success since winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, securing victories in every bilateral series since then along with the Asia Cup title last year. Suryakumar said this consistency meant the 2024 World Cup felt like a continuation of their regular cricket rather than a high-pressure event.

He added that the team intends to carry the same approach into the ongoing T20 World Cup, believing that strong performances will naturally lead to positive results.

The Indian skipper also provided an update on all-rounder Washington Sundar, assuring that the team management will not rush his return and will ensure he is fully fit before making a comeback.

Citing the example of Tilak Varma, who returned stronger after a brief injury layoff, Suryakumar said Washington is progressing well and is close to full fitness. He stressed that the team is prepared to remain patient until Sundar is completely ready.

Suryakumar credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for fostering a strong team-first culture in the dressing room. He said Gambhir has emphasised that individual milestones should take a back seat to collective goals, creating a positive and relaxed team environment.

He highlighted Ishan Kishan’s maiden T20 century as an example, noting that Kishan chose to finish the match with a six rather than focusing on reaching his hundred cautiously, reflecting the team’s shared mindset.

The captain also praised the atmosphere within the squad, pointing to shared activities such as team dinners and outings that have helped build unity and trust among players.

Addressing concerns around the dew factor, which has been cited as a challenge in the tournament, Suryakumar said the team is prepared for all conditions and does not want external factors to dictate its strategy.

He said India is comfortable both batting first and chasing targets and believes modern teams must prepare for dew rather than worry about it. With experienced players across formats, India will focus on playing quality cricket and adapting on match days as required.

India begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the United States at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, aiming to make history by securing a third world title.

Team India wore black armbands as they took the field on Day 2 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton to pay tribute to Milkha Singh, the legendary Indian sprinter, who died on Friday. Milkha Singh died of post-Covid complications at a hospital in Chandigarh where he had been admitted in early June. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tweeted shortly after play began on Saturday that the team is wearing black armbands “in remembrance of Milkha Singhji, who passed away due to COVID-19”.

Milkha Singh had tested positive for COVID-19 in May and was admitted to a private hospital in Chandigarh on May 24 as he had been suffering with COVID pneumonia. He was moved to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research on June 3.

The 91-year-old Milkha Singh died on Friday night after a month-long battle with COVID-19. He had lost his former national volleyball captain wife Nirmal Kaur to the same ailment.

The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly feels Team India will be at the top of their game when they lock horns with New Zealand in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton from Friday. The former Indian skipper said the Virat Kohli-led side is well balanced ahead of the summit clash and the hardwork the team has put in over the last two years has seen them reach the final of the inaugural edition of the championship.

It’s a big moment for all of us and I wish the team all the very best as they have worked very hard for two years to get to this position and I am sure they will be at top of the game,” Ganguly told ANI.

“Our team is a very balanced team. They bat till the end you have seen it during the Australian tour also they are a very solid team, hopefully, they will play to their potential. The quality of players which are there is fantastic and they have done wonderfully well over the years to come up to this position,” he added.

The Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh and four other players have tested positive for COVID-19 but the national camp will resume, in Bengaluru, as scheduled with those who are fit to train, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) said, on Friday.

Besides Manpreet, defender Surender Kumar, Jaskaran Singh, drag-flicker Varun Kumar and goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak have also tested positive for the dreaded virus.

I am self quarantined at the SAI campus and I am very happy with the way SAI authorities have handled the situation…I am doing fine and hope to recover very soon, I am very happy that they made testing of athletes mandatory. That proactive step helped in identifying the problem right in time ”

The 28-year-old Manpreet said in the statement issued by SAI.

The players tested positive after returning to the national hockey camp at the SAI South Centre in Bengaluru following a month-long break.

A SAI source, however, said that the camp will resume from August 20 as planned with the fit players.

“As of now the camp is on and will resume as planned. The fit players can start their individual training and the players who have tested positive for COVID can resume later after recovering but they will have to pass a fitness test,” the source said.

The national players were earlier stranded at the centre for over two months (till June) when a national lockdown was imposed to contain the virus.

After coming back from the break, the players were in mandatory quarantine before training’s resumption at the centre.

According to SAI, Pathak’s result came late from the state government.

“…SAI made it mandatory for all athletes , who reported back to the camp to take a rapid COVID-19 test upon arrival,” the SAI said in a statement.

According to the SAI source all the players who have tested positive were part of a 10-member group who have travelled together and there are chances of more positive results come out.

“Don’t be surprised if some more positive results come out,” the SAI source said.

“Since all the athletes who tested positive had travelled together, there is a high likelihood that they contracted the virus while travelling from their hometowns to Bengaluru.”

The SAI further said that all the five players initially tested negative in the rapid test.

But when Manpreet and Surender began to show some COVID-19 symptoms, they along with 10 other players, who had travelled together, were made to undergo the Quantitative RT-PCR test on Thursday.

“…and the five have been found to be COVID positive. Though the test results have still not been handed over to SAI, but the state government has informed the test results to the SAI authorities,” the SAI said.

“The quarantined athletes did not interact with other athletes who were already present at the camp,” the SAI said.

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the state government and of SAI were being followed strictly across the campus.
