Australian teenager Kaylee McKeown swam the second fastest women’s 100 metre backstroke. She was in close competition with the all time champion Regan Smith’s world record of 57.57 seconds. This 19-year old teenager is shaping as a serious competitor for multiple Olympic medals. She hit the walls in just 57.53 seconds at the sydney open which was only a few seconds away from the record held at the 2019 world championship. It was followed by her victory in the 200m backstroke in the fourth quickest time in history.

She said.,”I wasn’t expecting to come out and do that swim this morning and I’ve got no complaints about it. I’m pretty happy”, after setting a new Australian and Commonwealth record. “It was so close to the world record but I have to have something to chase and Regan is still the No.1 girl at the moment”.

She also revealed that Smith texted her after her 200m performance. She said,”It’s nice to hear from competitors from all over the world, nice to know they’re watching and they’ve got your back as well. Regan is an outstanding swimmer and she’s a lovely person”.

Ausralia’s Olympic trials are to be held next month in Adelaide where the records may fall. McKeown is also all set for the 200m individual medley in Tokyo.
