										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A ₹ 39-crore memorial for late DMK president and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will be constructed at the Marina on Kamarajar Salai in Chennai in recognition of his efforts to create a &#8220;modern Tamil Nadu&#8221;, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced on Tuesday.</p>
<p>The &#8220;Kalaignar Memorial&#8221; on the famous beach, where he has been laid to rest after his demise on August 7, 2018, will come up on 2.21 acres of land, Mr Stalin informed the state Assembly. Karunanidhi is fondly addressed as Kalaignar.</p>
<p>Leaders cutting across party lines, including main opposition party and DMK&#8217;s rival, AIADMK, welcomed the government&#8217;s announcement</p>
<p>Recalling the contributions of the late DMK stalwart in various spheres such as social welfare, transport, literature, education, urbanisation and infrastructure development, Mr Stalin hailed his father as the &#8220;sculptor of a modern Tamil Nadu.&#8221;</p>

The Tamil Nadu government took this decision after holding discussions with a medical panel and a legislature committee comprising of members from all parties.</div>

<div>The Chief Minister said in his statement &#8220;To control the spread of the pandemic, the ongoing lockdown will be implemented from May 24 for another week without any relaxations,&#8221;  The restrictions will come into effect from Monday.</div>

<div>Accordingly, for people&#8217;s benefit shops will remain open till 9 pm on Saturday and from 6 am to 9 pm on Sunday, when otherwise a day-long total shutdown will be in place. Pharmacies can remain open during the extended lockdown while distribution of milk, water and newspapers will continue.</div>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin in his letter to the President of India, Ramnath Kovind has requested to accept the recommendation of the state Government. They have recommended to pass appropriate actions and remit the life sentence of all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.</p>
<p>He has also demanded their immediate release. He says that the convicts have already paid a heavy price and suffered untold hardships and agony in the past three decades. He has also mentioned that the courts are also recognizing the need to decongest prisons due to the ongoing Covid crisis.</p>
<p>He also added that there has already been an inordinate delay in the consideration of their pleas for remission. He says this is what the other political parties of Tamil Nadu and the people of Tamil Nadu want. DMK in their manifesto had also promised to efforts to secure the release of the convicts.</p>
