Congress MP Shashi Tharoor did not attend the meeting of Lok Sabha Congress MPs convened by Rahul Gandhi on Friday. Party insiders stated that Tharoor had already informed the leadership about his inability to participate. Chandigarh MP and senior Congress leader Manish Tiwari was also missing from the discussion.

Tharoor’s social media posts indicated that he was in Kolkata on Thursday night to speak at an event organised by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation.

Rahul Gandhi, serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, chaired the meeting, interacted with the party MPs, and gathered their feedback on recent parliamentary developments. According to party sources, Gandhi remarked during the meeting that the government appeared to be ‘under pressure’ from the opposition on issues such as the Vande Mataram debate and electoral reforms.

This marks the third occasion on which Tharoor has remained absent from an important party meeting. Earlier, on December 1, the Thiruvananthapuram MP clarified that he had not deliberately avoided the Congress strategic group gathering held a day earlier. He explained that he was on a flight returning from Kerala when the meeting took place.

When questioned about the matter, Tharoor said, “I did not skip it; I was on a plane, coming from Kerala.”

His absence from a recent strategy discussion chaired by Sonia Gandhi, ahead of the Parliament’s winter session, drew significant attention—particularly because he had also missed the earlier meeting on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue, citing health concerns.

According to his office, he was travelling with his 90-year-old mother on a later flight from Kerala, which made it impossible for him to reach Delhi in time. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal was also unable to attend the meeting owing to his commitments related to local body election campaigning in Kerala.

Tharoor’s repeated absence from crucial party deliberations has increasingly become a subject of discussion within Congress circles.

A Delhi court on Tuesday requested responses from senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police regarding a petition challenging a magistrate’s decision not to order an investigation into allegations surrounding her inclusion in electoral rolls before she gained Indian citizenship in 1983.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne issued notices while hearing a revision petition that disputes the magistrate’s September 11 ruling.

The earlier order had rejected the complaint, stating that the allegations appeared crafted to confer legal authority on the court despite lacking merit, substance, or jurisdictional validity.

The judge has scheduled the case for further hearing on January 6.

The revision plea was submitted by advocate Vikas Tripathi, who serves as vice president of the Central Delhi Court Bar Association at Rouse Avenue courts.

Representing Tripathi, senior advocate Pavan Narang told the magisterial court that Sonia Gandhi’s name was allegedly added to the New Delhi constituency voter list in January 1980, a period during which she had not yet become an Indian citizen.

The petitioner further alleged that the entry involved falsification of records and resulted in deception of a public authority.

However, the magistrate dismissed the original plea seeking an investigation, concluding that the complainant was attempting to trigger criminal proceedings by urging the court to assume a jurisdiction it did not legally possess.

“In order to assist PCC reorganization, Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has invited the PCC Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur to submit their resignations,” he stated. Mr. Sidhu drew criticism for hailing the voters of Punjab for taking a “great” decision to bring in progress by electing the Aam Aadmi Party to power” in his first media appearance after the party’s defeat.

According to a statement made after the meeting to discuss the party’s electoral catastrophe in five states, the CWC advised Sonia Gandhi to address vulnerabilities and make required reforms.

The Congress’ highest decision-making body has come up with a plan and would convene a ‘chinatan shivir’ soon after parliament’s cabinet meeting, following which the CWC will convene again, according to general secretary KC Venugopal.

The group of 23 (G23) dissenting members are irritated and upset after Sonia Gandhi launched a two-pronged attack, the first inside the CWC meeting and the second at the press conference. According to sources, the meeting was organized not to appease the rebels, but to make it obvious to them that public statements from them were no longer acceptable.

Sonia Gandhi today urged opposition parties to “plan systematically” for the 2024 national election and “rise above compulsions” to work unitedly, adding that there was no other option. “We all have our compulsions, but clearly, a time has come when the interests of our nation demand that we rise above them,” the Congress president said at a 19-party meet.

The 2024 polls is “the ultimate goal”, the Congress president said, adding: “This is a challenge, but together we can and must rise to it because there is simply no alternative to working cohesively together.”

She urged opposition parties to begin to plan “with the single-minded objective of giving to our country a government that believes in the values of the Freedom Movement and in the principles and provisions of our Constitution.”

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav and Left leader Sitaram Yechury were among those who joined the virtual meet.

Sonia Gandhi’s initiative to host the interaction is seen to signal the Congress’s readiness to corral the opposition ahead of polls.

The Congress party “will not be found wanting,” said Sonia Gandhi, perhaps acknowledging skepticism about her party’s ability to inspire confidence as the lead player in any opposition plan to fight the BJP.

“The 75th anniversary of India’s Independence is indeed the most appropriate occasion for us to reaffirm our individual and collective resolve. Let me say for its part, the Indian National Congress will not be found wanting,” she said.

Today’s meeting takes off from recent opposition huddles and the unprecedented display of unity in the monsoon session, which saw opposition parties united taking on the government over issues like the Pegasus snooping scandal, rising fuel prices and the farmers’ agitation over three central laws.

Sonia Gandhi said the session was marked by the “determined unity” that all Opposition parties demonstrated for over 20 days in both houses of parliament. “We functioned in a coordinated manner with daily discussions among our floor leaders… I am confident that this unity will be sustained in future sessions of Parliament as well. But the larger political battle has to be fought outside it,” she said, referring to the next general election.

Previous Congress MP Sushmita Dev left the party today to join Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, surprising many in her former party, who even reached out to her on Twitter.

The fact that her Twitter bio now reads “Former Member” of the party was the first indication that she had resigned this morning. Even though her resignation letter to Congress head Sonia Gandhi appeared quickly, the party has officially disputed both her departure and the letter.

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President, has not received any correspondence from her. Before formally joining the party, Ms. Dev met with key Trinamool leaders, including Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien.
