Experts from Swansea University in Britain have recently conducted a study suggesting that the physical structure of your fingers can reveal secrets about your brain’s agility. The researchers believe that hormones received in the mother’s womb do not just determine finger length, but also play a role in increasing brain size. This phenomenon is referred to as the 2D:4D ratio, where 2D represents the index finger and 4D represents the ring finger.

The study, which involved research on 225 young children, found that boys with longer index fingers tended to have a larger head circumference. A larger head circumference is often associated with a brain that develops rapidly. This discovery suggests that specific developmental traits are established even before birth.

The length of the fingers depends on which hormones are more prevalent before birth. While a larger brain is often seen as a sign of quick intelligence and good memory, researchers noted that evolution played a role over millions of years as the human body adapted. Interestingly, while high estrogen levels might lead to a larger brain, it can also mean the body may have to work harder to fight certain diseases in the future.

Three weeks after research activities were halted due to a malfunction in an internal computer, the Hubble Space Telescope is still flying blind about 540 kilometres above Earth. Nasa experts have been working on repairing the school bus-sized flying observatory, which has been plagued by problems a decade before.

Nasa has already finished a test of the processes that will be used to reset the payload computer, which crashed on June 13 and forced all of the science equipment into a safe mode configuration. By next week, the process may be tested on the telescope.
