										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, was ordered to twenty-two and a half years in jail for the murder of George Floyd, whose last breaths on Chauvin&#8217;s knee sparked the most uproar against systemic racism in the United States in centuries.</p>
<p>The sentence, which came up short of the 30 years sought by prosecutors, comes after Chauvin ended his more than year-long solitude in court to express sympathies to the Floyd family and express his optimism that additional information may ultimately provide them with &#8220;some peace of mind.&#8221;</p>
<p>Judge Peter Cahill went above and beyond the twelve and a half-year sentence recommended by state standards, citing “your misuse of a position of trust and power, as well as the particular cruelty” displayed to Floyd.</p>
