Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal, two businessmen, have been sentenced to seven years in prison for tampering with evidence in the 1997 fire at Delhi’s Uphaar theatre, which killed 59 people. The Ansal brothers, who own a large real estate company, were also penalized 2.25 crore apiece by the Patiala House Court in Delhi.

A month ago, both were found guilty of tampering with evidence in the case. Today was the day of the sentencing. The Supreme Court had already sentenced the Ansals to two years in prison. They were later released and fined Rs 30 crore each, which would be used to construct a trauma center in the national capital.

According to police, the principal of a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district was sentenced to prison after dangling a five-year-old pupil upside down from the first floor of the building as a punishment for eating gol gappas.

On Thursday, a video of the event went viral on social media, showing other students at Sadbhavna Shikshan Sansthan Junior High School staring in disbelief as headmaster Manoj Vishwakarma dangled the child upside down.

The child was punished, according to the police, because he ate gol gappas outside the school without alerting the teacher. Vishwakarma grabbed the minor pupil by the ankles and turned him upside down as soon as he returned to school.

On Monday, Two former officials were sentenced to 15 years in jail over a palace coup attempt that sparked a crisis in a kingdom seen as a regional oasis of stability by the Jordanian court.

Former royal court chief Bassem Awadallah and an ex-envoy to Saudi Arabia, Sharif Hassan Bin Zaid , had been convicted of conspiring to topple King Abdullah 2 in favour of his half-brother Prince Hamzah.

The former crown prince himself was not on trail.

But the 13-page charge sheet said Hamzah , 41, “was determined to fulfill his personal ambition to rule, in violation of the Hashemite constitution and customs”.

Journalists at a makeshift media center outside the State Security Court, a military tribunal that also includes civilian judges, were later shown shorts videos of the ruling being issued.

The men’s lawyer said they would appeal.
