New Delhi | A group of opposition parties, on tuesday, submitted a formal notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla from his post. The motion, which bears the signatures of 118 members, is expected to be taken up for discussion on March 9.

The opposition has leveled serious allegations against the Speaker, primarily focusing on the suppression of the Leader of the Opposition’s voice during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address and the forced suspension of eight members. In response to these developments, sources indicate that Om Birla has decided on ethical grounds not to occupy the Speaker’s chair until the matter is resolved.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has confirmed that proceedings will follow established rules. The notice was handed over to Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh by a delegation including Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, Chief Whip K. Suresh, and MP Mohammad Javed, among others. While members from the Congress, SP, DMK, and RJD have signed the notice, notable absences include the signatures of Rahul Gandhi and members of the TMC.

Four Major Allegations by the Opposition:
* February 2: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was allegedly prevented from completing his speech during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address.
* February 3: Eight MPs were suspended for the remainder of the session, a move the opposition describes as punishment for exercising democratic rights.
* Nishikant Dubey Case: The notice mentions objectionable remarks made against former Prime Ministers without naming Nishikant Dubey.
* Misuse of Office: The opposition rejected the Speaker’s claim that Congress members intended to cause an “untoward incident” near the Prime Minister’s seat, calling such accusations a blatant misuse of a constitutional position.

The Puducherry police have refused to grant permission for a roadshow planned for December 5 by actor-turned-politician Vijay. His party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, had requested approval to conduct the event along the route from Kalapet to Kannaiakoil, along with a public address by Vijay near the Sonnampalayam water tank.

Vijay’s previous rallies were abruptly halted following a tragic stampede in Karur.

After the initial rejection, party general secretaries B Anand and Aadhav Arjuna met senior police officials on December 1, urging them to reconsider. Despite the appeal, officials maintained their stance, noting that a roadshow would not be advisable.

Puducherry DIG Sathya Sundaram stated that an open-ground public meeting had been recommended as a safer alternative and confirmed that permission for a roadshow was not supported.

The decision comes in the wake of heightened safety concerns after political events in Tamil Nadu were suspended. Vijay’s previous rallies were abruptly halted following a tragic stampede in Karur, which resulted in 41 fatalities and left more than 60 people injured.

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor stated on Wednesday, that choosing not to contest the Bihar assembly elections may have been a mistake. He added that he never imagined his party would secure less than four percent of the vote. His remarks followed the Jan Suraaj Party’s complete failure to win any seats in the recent state polls.

Speaking to media, Kishor said, his decision not to enter the electoral fray could be viewed as an error in judgment and that the party still has a long distance to cover before achieving meaningful results.

He expressed surprise at their low vote share and noted that the outcome was far below expectations.

The former election strategist affirmed that his mission would continue and that he was determined to fight until his party succeeds in Bihar. He said he would not step back until he achieved victory in the state even though he could not predict how long it might take.

A day earlier, Kishor claimed that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United would have been reduced to around twenty five seats if the state government had not distributed financial benefits shortly before the polls.

According to him, over sixty thousand beneficiaries in each constituency received ten thousand rupees and nearly one and a half crore women were promised two lakh rupees under a self employment scheme.

He accused the NDA government of committing to spending forty thousand crore rupees of public funds and releasing a significant part of it right before the elections

The recent Lok Sabha election results showed that the Congress may have weakened but has not vanished, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi appears intent on ensuring that by 2029, the party slips into political insignificance.

Modi’s fiercest verbal attacks have long been reserved for the Congress and especially for Rahul Gandhi, a pattern that began well before he became prime minister. What remains puzzling is? Why the Congress continues to be singled out, even after suffering repeated electoral blows?

During the Bihar election season and the vote count, two moments drew attention because the intensity of his criticism did not match the occasion. The first came last Friday, when counting trends placed the National Democratic Alliance firmly ahead while the Mahagathbandhan collapsed, with the Congress touching a new low in the state. The BJP headquarters in Delhi was set for celebration, yet Modi chose the moment to escalate his critique of the Congress leadership.

He declared that the Congress had transformed into what he called the Muslim League Maoist Congress. He accused its leaders of embracing negative politics and hinted at the possibility of another major internal split. The idea of Congress being influenced by urban Maoists had earlier been voiced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while the Muslim League reference had been made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Modi fused these accusations into a single sweeping charge.

After the 2014 Lok Sabha debacle, Sonia Gandhi had accepted that the party was widely seen as pro Muslim, suggesting that Hindu voters had distanced themselves. Modi’s new label combined two of the most damaging political portrayals in modern India and applied them to the Congress.

Modi’s second major attack in three days came during the Ramnath Goenka Lecture in New Delhi, an event meant to honour the founder of a publication known for its independent stance. While discussing his government’s achievements, Modi also outlined what he believes is the current electoral mantra. He urged all state governments, regardless of ideology, to focus on development, business friendliness, and investment climate, arguing that such priorities determine political futures

He then returned to the Congress with a sharper edge, claiming that while Maoist violence in the country was receding, it was gaining ground inside the Congress. He accused the party of nurturing Maoist ideology, supporting forces that reject the Constitution, and fostering urban Naxal sympathisers within major institutions. According to him, those who entered the party a decade ago had now turned it into a Muslim League Maoist Congress that had allegedly abandoned national interest and become a threat to national unity.

Within three days, Modi’s rhetoric toward the Congress shifted from branding to allegations of betrayal and jeopardising national cohesion. This raises unavoidable questions about evidence and why no legal action accompanies such serious claims. Yet the broader motive seems clearer. The sharpened criticism is part of a deliberate political strategy designed to shape public perception well ahead of 2029.

Modi himself hinted at this strategy in his victory address when he spoke of a potential major division within the Congress. Despite setbacks, the Congress remains the only party with a nationwide footprint capable of challenging him. Its performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections showed resilience, signalling that it is weakened but not defeated. Modi’s intensified narrative appears aimed at ensuring that by the next national election, the Congress becomes irrelevant.

Gandhinagar | In a sweeping government revamp, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday administered oaths to 21 legislators—including 19 new faces—as ministers, raising the total strength of the cabinet to 26. Among the new ministers are 12 first‑time MLAs. Only five ministers from the previous cabinet remained unaltered. Notably, Harsh Sanghavi has been promoted to Deputy Chief Minister. Meanwhile, Rivaba Jadeja, wife of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, was among the fresh inductions.

The reshuffle followed the collective resignation of 16 ministers on Thursday. Of those, 10 were accepted, while six ministers—among them Sanghavi and Pansheriya—were retained (or re‑sworn) on Friday. With the new appointees, the cabinet has grown from 17 to 26 members; the state allows up to 27 ministers. Three of the ministers are women.

Highlights of the reshuffle:

  • Harsh Sanghavi, previously Home Minister, is now Deputy Chief Minister and holds important responsibilities including Home Affairs.

  • Rivaba Jadeja has been inducted as a Minister of State, marking her debut in the cabinet.

  • The caste and community composition of the new cabinet has been carefully balanced: including Patidars, OBCs, Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) among the ministers.

  • The changes are widely seen as a preparatory move ahead of the 2027 assembly elections and upcoming local body polls.

The restructuring underscores the BJP’s attempt to refresh its leadership pool, involve newer legislators and recalibrate regional and community representation in Gujarat’s governance.

Lawyer-turned-politician Priyanka Tibrewal will file her nomination for the bypolls at Bhabanipur assembly constituency in Kolkata on Monday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pitted her against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

A vice-president of the BJP’s youth wing in West Bengal, Tibrewal shot to prominence after she moved the court seeking an inquiry into the alleged post-poll violence in Bengal.

“The people of West Bengal have the right to live. This right is being taken away from them by the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee. I am fighting for the people of Bengal,” Tiberwal was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The young leader launched her campaign along with Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh by painting the party symbol on a wall in Bhabanipur region.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Thursday said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s statement against Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath over an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

This came after BJP MLA Devyani Farande demanded action against Mr Thackeray for allegedly using derogatory remarks against his Yogi Adityanath in the past.

“The statement was made over an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. No one garlands Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra while wearing slippers. It is our culture and tradition. This is our respect to Shivaji Maharaj,” Mr Raut said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ms Farande said: “Uddhav Thackeray had said about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath that he is not ‘Yogi’ but Bhogi. He also had said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should be beaten with slippers. This is not appropriate. We hope strict action will be taken against him.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has urged the opposition parties to win people’s trust and also called upon them to stay united and strong.

He made this appeal during a virtual meeting of opposition leaders convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday.

Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday said, “During the meeting, Uddhav Thackeray stressed that the parties must win people’s trust.”

“As of today, there is no lust for power among the opposition parties, but even when the chair of power is in sight, people should be able to trust the opposition parties with the belief that they will remain strong and united,” Mr Raut quoted Uddhav Thackeray as saying during the meeting.

The Sena’s Rajya Sabha member said that Sonia Gandhi had personally called up the leaders of all parties and requested them to join the meeting.

The meeting was attended by leaders of 19 opposition parties, including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and four non-Congress chief ministers – TMC’s Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), DMK’s M K Stalin (Tamil Nadu) and JMM’s Hemant Soren (Jharkhand) and Uddhav Thackeray.

During the meeting, Mrs Gandhi urged the leaders to rise above political compulsions to take on the BJP in the interest of the nation and start planning “systematically” to realise the “ultimate goal” of winning the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to provide a government that believes in the values of the freedom movement and provisions of the Constitution.

Mr Raut said that apart from discussion on how to prepare for the next general elections by staying united, several issues like alleged Pegasus snooping, issues concerning farmers, price rise and “attack on democracy” figured at the virtual meeting, he said.

When asked about the developments in Afghanistan, Mr Raut said, India faces the threat of Taliban since it has support of Pakistan and China, which are India’s “enemies”, reported news agency PTI.

If there are voices of support for Taliban in India, the government should crush them immediately, ” he said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has agreed, in principle, to take up the issue of a caste-based census with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the opposition Tejashwi Yadav claimed on Friday.

Mr Yadav said this while talking to reporters after calling on the chief minister inside the assembly premises, leading a delegation of leaders of the five-party Grand Alliance helmed by his RJD.

The Centre’s recent statement in the Parliament that a caste-based census would include only the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes has triggered a fresh demand for inclusion of the OBCs, who dominate the political scenario in Bihar post implementation of the Mandal commission report.

“The chief minister told us that he agreed with our demand for a caste based census. He said he was leaving for Delhi later in the day. Upon his return on August 02 he will write to the Prime Minister and seek an appointment”, Mr Yadav said.

The former Deputy Chief Minister has been suggesting that the chief minister should meet the PM heading a delegation, which could include the leader of the opposition, to broach the subject.

Notably, Mr Kumar, an OBC himself, too has repeatedly spoken in favour of holding a caste-based census and recently urged the centre to reconsider its stance on the issue.

Besides, resolutions in support of a caste-based census have been passed unanimously by both Houses of the state legislature in the past.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said that her party will have an open mind on forging alliance for Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2022. Vadra is in Lucknow to give a push to the Congress party and stop the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from returning to power.

“I do not rule out (alliance). We are absolutely not closed-minded. We are having an open mind,” said Vadra. “Our aim is to defeat the BJP,” she added.

The Congress leader also urged other parties to have an open mind. Vadra said that the party organisation is also her area of focus, and emphasised that a lot of work have been done on it, buin a silent manner.

We have done the maximum work during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can see that we are the ones who have raised issues. Congress is no longer confined to garlanding photographs. Our party has been out of power for 30-32 years, and it has become weak. However, full efforts have been made, and a lot of energy has come (into the party),” the Congress general secretary added.

Vadra later interacted with senior party leaders of the state, including UP Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu, co-incharge of Uttar Pradesh Dheeraj Gurjar, party spokesperson Ashok Singh and Naseemuddin Siddiqui.
