The AIADMK and PMK, the opposition parties, congratulated R N Ravi on his appointment as Governor of Tamil Nadu on Friday, but the Congress’ state unit questioned the Centre’s “intention” in making the decision, questioning whether it was a ploy to destabilize the MK Stalin-led DMK administration.

Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, according to TNCC President K S Alagiri, created “many roadblocks” in neighboring Puducherry after being appointed as Lt Governor when the Congress was in power there, preventing “several welfare schemes” from being implemented. Ravi received greetings from top AIADMK leaders O Panneerselvam and K Palaniswami.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday asked the Centre to repeal its three farm laws and apologise to farmers for the violence against them in Haryana’s Karnal.

“The manner in which farmers were attacked in Karnal of Haryana is condemnable. With such brutal actions, an atmosphere is being created to instigate farmers across the country,” Mr Gehlot tweeted.

Around 10 people were injured on Saturday as police allegedly lathi-charged a group of farmers disrupting traffic movement on a national highway while heading towards Karnal to protest against a BJP meeting.

Mr Gehlot said Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala are giving statements that do not make any sense.

He said the Haryana government officials are giving instructions for violent actions against farmers and the entire country is condemning the police lathi-charge at farmers but the Haryana government is taking no action against such officers.

“The Modi government should not test the farmers’ patience and immediately repeal the agricultural laws and apologise to the farmers,” Mr Gehlot said.

Enacted in September last year, the three farm laws have been projected by the Centre as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell their products anywhere in the country.

The protesting farmers, however, have expressed fears that the legislation would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of Minimum Support Price and do away with the mandi system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates.

Previous Congress MP Sushmita Dev left the party today to join Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, surprising many in her former party, who even reached out to her on Twitter.

The fact that her Twitter bio now reads “Former Member” of the party was the first indication that she had resigned this morning. Even though her resignation letter to Congress head Sonia Gandhi appeared quickly, the party has officially disputed both her departure and the letter.

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President, has not received any correspondence from her. Before formally joining the party, Ms. Dev met with key Trinamool leaders, including Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien.

Political parties must make criminal histories of their poll candidates public within 48 hours of their nomination, the Supreme Court said Wednesday, in a major step toward decriminalizing politics.

Candidates must upload these details either within 48 hours of their selection or at least two weeks before the first day for filing nomination papers, according to a Supreme Court judgment issued in February last year in connection with the Bihar election in November. That time limit has now been reduced to 48 hours.

The court also stated that criminal cases against MLAs or MPs cannot be withdrawn without the approval of High Courts, to prevent state governments from abusing their authority. The court is hearing a petition that calls for suspending the symbol of political parties that do not disclose the criminal backgrounds of their candidates.
