]]> The effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19 declines faster than that of the AstraZeneca jab, according to a new study published on Thursday.

“Two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech have greater initial effectiveness against new COVID-19 infections, but this declines faster compared with two doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca,” researchers at Oxford University said.

The study, which has not been peer reviewed, is based on the results of a survey by Britain’s Office for National Statistics that carried out PCR tests from December last year to this month on randomly selected households.

It found that “the dynamics of immunity following second doses differed significantly” between Pfizer and AstraZeneca, according to the university’s Nuffield Department of Medicine.

“Yes we are engaged with Pfizer and they have indicated the availability of a certain amount of vaccine in the coming months, possibly starting in July,” he said.

“We are looking at what their expectations are from the government and they are looking at what our expectations are from them. That’s the process in which this will move. Because they will have to come to India and apply for licensure in India, that’s one path and there are imperatives of cold chain and supply. They have requested indemnity to all the nations, including the country of origin. We are examining this request and will take a decision in the larger interest of people and on merit. This is under discussion and there is no decision as of now,” Paul said.

Pfizer is ready to offer 5 crore doses to India between July and October this year and has sought specific relaxations.

]]> Bharat Biotech has been granted permission to conduct clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine, on children aging between 2 to 18 years, by India’s Drug Regulator.

Knowing that there cannot be a proper opening up until the entire population is vaccinated and protected, the experts in India underlined that there is need to vaccinate people below the age of 18 also.

Covaxine by Bharat Biotech and Covishield by Serum Institute of India, are the two vaccines approved by the government of India in Jaunuary 2021.

US regulators this week gave emergency use authorisation to Pfizer-BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine for children aged between 12 and 15. On May 5, Canada become first country in the world to approve Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for ages as young as 12.

]]> Pfizer and BioNTech said Thursday their Covid-19 vaccine was highly effective against the South African variant in the latest phase of ongoing clinical trials.
No cases of the disease were observed in South Africa during the phase-three trial study among participants who had received their second dose, the companies said in a statement. 

Several coronavirus variants with the potential to be more transmissible have caused global concern over whether existing vaccines will still protect the world from a virus that is constantly mutating.

“In South Africa, where the B.1.351 lineage is prevalent and 800 participants were enrolled, nine cases of Covid-19 were observed, all in the placebo group,” the companies said.

The nine strains were sequenced and six of them were confirmed to be of B.1.351 lineage, they said.

“The high vaccine efficacy observed through up to six months following a second dose and against the variant prevalent in South Africa provides further confidence in our vaccine’s overall effectiveness,” said Albert Bourla, chief executive of Pfizer.

Overall, the vaccine was 91.3 percent effective against Covid-19 in the analysis of 46,307 trial participants across several countries.

From the 927 confirmed symptomatic cases of Covid-19 in the trial, 850 cases were in the placebo group and 77 cases were in the vaccinated group.

The vaccine was 100 percent effective in preventing severe disease as defined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 95.3 percent effective in preventing severe disease as defined by the US Food

 US drug maker Pfizer has shipped the first batch of the much-awaited Kovid-19 vaccines from the Michigan warehouse.  This vaccine has recently been approved in the US and with the introduction of the Kovid-19 vaccine, the biggest vaccination campaign in the history of America has started.
