Since entering streaming in 2007, Netflix has consistently challenged traditional media norms. It popularised the practice of releasing entire seasons at once, avoided advertising in marquee originals such as Squid Game, Stranger Things and Bridgerton, and priced subscriptions far below cable television rates in the United States. With 302 million subscribers and revenues of 39 billion dollars in 2024, Netflix stands as the world’s largest independent streaming platform. Yet growth driven purely by subscriptions is showing signs of saturation.

As it looks to expand further, Netflix is increasingly resembling the legacy media companies it once disrupted. The company has introduced advertising supported plans and entered live sports content. Its co chief executive officer Ted Sarandos has also emerged as a central figure in a dramatic merger battle unfolding in Hollywood.

Paramount Skydance, a studio group with 29 billion dollars in revenue in 2024 and known for films like Titanic, Forrest Gump and the Mission Impossible franchise, had made three unsuccessful attempts by October 2025 to acquire Warner Bros Discovery.

The final bid stood at 58 billion dollars. Netflix then entered the race, announcing a deal on December 5 to acquire Warner Bros Discovery for 83 billion dollars. Just days later, Paramount escalated the contest with a hostile bid valued at 108 billion dollars.

Warner Bros Discovery generated more than 39 billion dollars in revenue in 2024 and owns some of the most valuable assets in global entertainment. Its television studios have produced hits such as The Big Bang Theory, while its film divisions are behind franchises including Harry Potter,

The Lord of the Rings and Barbie. For Netflix, the crown jewel may be HBO Max, home to globally successful shows like Game of Thrones and The White Lotus. HBO Max alone has about 128 million subscribers, making it a highly attractive acquisition target.

Analysts point out that Netflix’s offer values Warner’s projected 2026 earnings from streaming and films at about 25 times Ebitda, while Paramount’s bid pushes that multiple even higher. By comparison, Disney trades at roughly 11 times its earnings. This sharp premium has raised questions across the industry, not about the logic of consolidation but about whether the price can be justified.

Past media mergers over the last two decades have often failed to deliver promised synergies, instead eroding brands and shareholder value due to cultural mismatches.

If Netflix succeeds, it is expected to take on nearly 59 billion dollars in debt. Paramount would also need to raise massive capital if its bid prevails. Critics argue that both companies could create new intellectual property and expand organically at far lower cost, even if acquisitions promise faster scale.

At its core, this contest reflects a battle for survival. As traditional television revenues decline and artificial intelligence reshapes content creation and distribution, only companies with massive scale are likely to endure. Streaming and the internet initially broadened opportunities for niche content, but they have also concentrated audience attention around a handful of dominant platforms.

Today, global media power lies with companies that control distribution and discovery, including Google through YouTube, Meta via Facebook and Instagram, Amazon with Prime Video and Apple with its ecosystem.

Success increasingly depends on owning vast libraries of content and sophisticated technology to surface and monetise it across borders and formats.

In this environment, Netflix and Paramount are chasing size to stay competitive. A combined Netflix and Warner Bros Discovery entity would generate an estimated 70 billion dollars in revenue, while a Paramount Warner combination could reach around 79 billion dollars. Either would surpass YouTube’s estimated 61 billion dollars and Disney’s roughly 58 billion dollars from comparable businesses.

The unfolding merger drama underscores a defining moment for the global entertainment industry, where scale, technology and content ownership will decide which players remain standing.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his opulent films such as “Devdas”, “Bajirao Mastani” and “Padmaavat”, has joined hands with streamer Netflix for his pre-Independence set series, “Heeramandi”.

Described as a passion project from the director, who just completed 25 years in show business, the series will explore stories of courtesans and the hidden cultural reality of “Heeramandi”, a dazzling district, during pre-Independent India.

It’s a series about love, betrayal, succession and politics in the ‘kothas’ which promises Bhansali’s trademark larger-than-life sets, multi-faceted characters and soulful compositions.

This piece-de-resistance will be created by the master filmmaker with an eye for detail and intense intricacies only he is capable of, the streamer said in a statement.

Bhansali, 58, called “Heeramandi” an important milestone in his journey as a filmmaker. “This is an epic, first of its kind series based on the courtesans of Lahore. It is an ambitious, grand and all-encompassing series; therefore I am nervous yet excited about making it. I am looking forward to my partnership with Netflix and bringing Heeramandi to audiences all over the world,” the director said.

Monika Shergill, VP, Content, Netflix India said, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has created a stunning brand of cinema which is uniquely his own, with emotionally charged storytelling, magnificent sets and unforgettable characters.

Bhansali made his directorial debut with “Khamoshi: The Musical” in 1996. His other major projects include “Black”, “Guzaarish” and “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela”.

Netflix is currently searching for an executive to look after its expansion into video games. Sources revealed that Netflix is making efforts to grow its business and get into the gaming world as well.

The video gaming industry has benefitted very much due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Hence, the OTT pltform is thinking of making a move towards the sector. A report said that Netflix has approached veteran gaming industries for the job.

Netflix has experimented very much with its streaming programs. It streams movies such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and You vs. Wild, where the viewer thinks about the character’s moves. It has also created games related to the shows like Stranger Things and Money Heist.

The reports earlier said on Friday that it has offered a bunch of games that are similar to the Apple’s online subscription, Apple Arcade.

The firestorm over controversial Netflix film “Cuties,” which led to a huge spike in U.S.  customer cancellations following its debut earlier this month, burned out after a few days, according to new data.
A campaign waged against Netflix over “cuties” and the film’s sexualized portrayal of children produced a surge in U.S. subscription cancellations over the weekend, according to research company YipitData.
Netflix’s cancellation rate in the U.S. jumped to nearly eight times higher than the average daily levels recorded in August 2020 — reaching a multiyear high, the data-analytics provider told Variety. With the #CancelNetflix hashtag continuing to trend on social media, it is possible elevated churn could continue in the coming days, according to the firm.
“Cuties” tells the story of an 11-year-old Senegalese girl living in Paris who struggles to find her identity, torn between her family’s Muslim traditions and her peer group’s attempts to emulate the sexualized personae of women as portrayed in Western culture and on  social media.  The film includes scenes of the protagonist, Amy, performing highly sexualized dance routines with the Cuties dance crew and shows the underage characters in other adult situations – and, predictably, a backlash ensued.  That caused the hashtag “#CancelNetflix” to trend on Twitter following its Sept.  9 release worldwide on the streaming service.

Netflix defended that cuties is written and directed by French filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré, calling it a “powerful story.” The production had a counselor on set and the project had received approval from the French government’s child-protection authoritie.
“‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a company rep said in a statement earlier this month. “It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up — and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”
Doucouré has repeatedly said that the purpose of her film — quite the opposite of promoting a view of children as sexual subjects — is to show the world through the eyes of young girls and shine a spotlight on the problem of social media encouraging children to assume hyper-sexualized identities.

The Indian Air Force has written to the Central Board of Film Certification complaining against its “undue negative portrayal” in the movie Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’, which is scheduled for a release on Netflix today.

The Air Force in its letter to the censor board, and sent to Netflix and Dharma Productions, has stated that as per initial understanding, “Dharma Productions had agreed to represent Indian Air Force with authenticity and make all efforts to ensure that the film helps to inspire the next generation of IAF officers. “However, when the trailer of the movie was released recently, it was observed that “certain scenes and dialogues in the movie and its trailer, which was forwarded to this office for viewing, have been found to portray the IAF in an undue negative light.”

The letter written by the IAF and accessed by ANI, read “In the aim to glorify the screen character of ‘Ex-Fit Lt Gunjan Saxena’, M/s Dharma Productions presented some situations that are misleading and portray an inappropriate work culture especially against women in the IAF.

“The story of the Dharma Productions movie is based on the first Indian Air Force woman pilot who was part of the 1999 Kargil conflict.
Saxena, who is one of the first female pilots to fly in combat, played an important role in rescuing injured soldiers during the Kargil War in 1999 and was awarded the gallantry Shaurya Vir Award for displaying courage during the war.In the communication, the Air Force said that as a service, it has ensured “that the organisation is gender neutral and has always provided an equal opportunity to both male and women personnel.”

IAF has also annexed the summary of the scenes and dialogues of the script, which are considered objectionable due to the presentation of incorrect gender bias with the letter.
