Unidentified persons allegedly opened fire outside the residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty in Mumbai’s Juhu area in the early hours of Sunday, prompting a swift response from the police and forensic teams, officials said.

According to initial information, at least four rounds were fired at the building. No injuries were reported in the incident. An official said it was not immediately clear whether Shetty was present at his residence at the time of the firing.

“Someone fired on the building. Zonal police and crime branch teams are investigating the matter,” an official stated. Following the incident, security outside the building was significantly tightened as a precautionary measure.

Personnel from the Juhu police station and the Mumbai crime branch rushed to the spot soon after the firing and began an investigation. The police are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the attackers and reconstruct the sequence of events.

A forensic science team also reached the location to collect evidence that could help establish the motive and trace those involved. An FIR has been registered in connection with the incident, officials confirmed.

Rohit Shetty is one of Bollywood’s most prominent filmmakers and is widely known for successful franchises such as Golmaal and Singham, starring Ajay Devgn, as well as the Shah Rukh Khan-led Chennai Express.

The World Cup-winning Argentine captain is being provided security arrangements comparable to those used during global football tournaments, officials said.

Following his arrival, Messi headed to the Taj Hotel in Colaba for a short rest before proceeding to the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium.

There, he is scheduled to attend a Padel GOAT Club event, which will be followed by a celebrity football match later in the afternoon.

Messi, who is accompanied by Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, is expected to reach the iconic Wankhede Stadium around 5 pm for the main highlight of the Mumbai leg of the tour.

Fans have been gathering in large numbers, hoping to catch a glimpse of the football icon.

In view of the anticipated crowd, Mumbai Police have enforced stringent security measures at both venues. Restrictions have been imposed on carrying water bottles, metal items and coins inside the stadiums, while watchtowers have been installed to closely monitor crowd movement.

More than 2,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around Brabourne and Wankhede stadiums to ensure smooth conduct of the events.

A senior police official said,

“The arrangements were strengthened after the disruption witnessed during the Kolkata leg of the tour.”

The official said,

“Considering the chaos that prevailed in Kolkata and the security breach reported there, we have put in place World Cup-level security arrangements in Mumbai.”

Messi had arrived in India in the early hours of Saturday, but his Kolkata appearance later that day was marred by overcrowding and poor crowd management. In contrast, the Hyderabad leg of the tour went off smoothly, offering a reassuring experience for fans and organisers alike.

Mumbai | Gangster Anmol Bishnoi, a prime accused in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, is being deported to India from the United States according to a police official. Bishnoi, who is also wanted in connection with the firing at Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in April 2024, is expected to arrive in Delhi on Wednesday.

The Mumbai police submitted two proposals regarding his extradition and the official noted that there are several cases registered against him across different parts of the country, while, the Union government will decide which agency will take his custody first.

Earlier this month, investigative agencies learned that Bishnoi who frequently moved between the United States and Canada had been detained in Canada.

He was reportedly carrying a Russian passport obtained using forged documents. According to the official Zeeshan Siddique, son of Baba Siddique and NCP leader, he received an email stating that Anmol Bishnoi had been removed from the United States.

He added that this indicates Bishnoi is no longer in the US and should be brought to India to face trial for his crimes.

Mumbai | An assistant police inspector from Powai police station took immediate action during a tense hostage situation in Mumbai when a gunman, identified as Rohit Arya, held 17 children and two women captive inside R A Studio in Powai. The officer, Amol Waghmare, opened fire after Arya aimed his weapon directly at him, creating a life-threatening situation.

According to officials, Waghmare had first attempted to calm Arya and persuade him to surrender peacefully, but the situation escalated when Arya pointed his gun at the officer in close quarters, prompting Waghmare to fire in self-defense.

Police Investigation and Evidence Collection

Following the incident, the Crime Branch initiated a detailed investigation into the case. The weapon found in Arya’s possession was seized and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to determine whether he had fired any shots. Officials also gathered additional evidence from the scene, including a suspicious cloth with a strong odor that investigators suspect might have been soaked in a chemical intended for arson. The team is now speaking with individuals associated with the project to understand Arya’s possible motives.

Background of the Hostage-Taker

Preliminary findings reveal that Arya, originally from Anand in Gujarat, had been living in Pune before relocating to Mumbai two months prior to the event. He was married and had a ten-year-old son. At the time of the incident, his wife was in Ahmedabad. Since no immediate family members were available in Mumbai, Arya’s body was kept at the state-run J J Hospital until his relatives arrived for the postmortem examination.

Mumbai | Mumbai police rescued nineteen people including seventeen children from a studio in the Powai area after a tense hostage situation that lasted for about an hour. The man who held them captive, identified as Rohit Arya, suffered bullet injuries during the operation and later died in hospital.According to officials, Arya had called several boys and girls aged around fifteen to a local studio under the pretext of holding auditions for a web series. During the incident, he carried an air gun and some chemical substances. Joint Commissioner of Police Satyanaranyan Choudhary confirmed that all children were rescued safely.

Police received an emergency call around 1:45 pm reporting that a man had confined children inside R A Studio located in the Mahavir Classic building.

Teams from the Powai police station, Quick Response Team, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, and the fire department quickly reached the spot to handle the crisis.

Kidnapper Rohit Arya, suffered bullet injuries during the operation and later died in hospital.

Before the rescue, Arya posted a video online claiming that he wanted to talk to certain people and did not intend to ask for money. He also threatened to set the studio on fire if his demands were ignored.

When negotiations failed, officers entered the premises through a bathroom and managed to rescue all hostages including a senior citizen and another man.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade described the situation as highly sensitive, emphasizing that saving the children was the top priority. He noted that officers handled the situation with extreme caution to prevent harm to any of the hostages.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that the state government would release further details soon and praised the police team for their swift and effective action.

A bailable warrant has been issued against former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh by the inquiry commission headed by retired Bombay high court judge, Justice Kailas Uttamchand Chandiwal, on Tuesday, for failing to appear before the probe panel in-person.

The Maharashtra government had formed the one-person commission in March to probe the allegations levelled by Param Bir Singh against former state home minister Anil Deshmukh. In a letter to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, Singh had accused Deshmukh of asking police officers in Mumbai to collect money from restaurant and bar owners.

The commission was given six months to determine if the allegations levelled by Singh needed to be investigated by the state anti-corruption bureau, if he had submitted sufficient proof to establish that Deshmukh or any staffer from his office committed any misconduct as alleged in the letter, and to offer any suggestions the commission deemed fit. Singh had filed an appeal before the Bombay high court on August 4 seeking orders to disband the commission.

In his appeal, Singh stated that since both the Supreme Court and the Bombay high court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a probe into Singh’s allegations on Deshmukh there was no need for the Chandiwal commission to continue with their inquiry.

The Chandiwal commission had issued summons to Singh multiple times but he failed to appear before it. The commission had also imposed penalties of Rs.5,000 in June and of Rs.25,000 twice last month on Singh for failing to appear before it.

Four First Information Reports (FIR) have been filed against Singh, of which two have been filed in Mumbai and two in Thane. On August 21, the fourth FIR was registered against Singh by the Mumbai police on the basis of a complaint filed by a businessman accusing Singh of extortion. A lookout notice has also been issued against Singh by the Thane police to prevent him from leaving the country.
